Can Barack Obama deliver?

Indulge us folks. OK, this isn't much to do with Liverpool except in a big picture sense, but the decisions made in Washington will affect us all. Look at the decision to go to war in Iraq.

Published on November 7th 2008.

Can Barack Obama deliver?

The Results..

Yes: - 74%
No: - 26%

So who do you want?

Obama has been painted as the Democratic saviour of the World, the new John F Kennedy (conveniently forgetting the latter's flaws). He's the fresh blood, the new broom, the way forward who's going to govern with a conscience. Alternatively he's an inexperienced politician with the gift of the gab. Nutters think he's an alien with Al-Qaeda links. Others seem to think that his skin tone is a problem – largely IQ challenged people in all those States we can't remember the names of.

McCain has been described as the safe pair of Republican hands, the comfort zone, the Vet with the go-get. This is a man who we can trust because he's seen it all before. He claims he will show a softer, less hawkish, Republican side than GW Bush, but with plenty of nous on the economy.

Then again he's been described as a senile old gimmer who thinks he can rule the most influential world nation...a liability with a loon in Sarah Palin as a sidekick and a whole series of oven ready chips named after him. Maybe not the latter.

McCain has the experience. Experience counts for everything. We are the brink of an abyss otherwise. Charisma does not save the day.

You should give a damn. How blinkered can you be. At least people are queuing up to vote. Unlike the parish people of Liverpool, like you, who can't even be arsed voting even for people who directly govern their own city, those queuing up for five hours obviously do give a damn about their own fate, possibly even the fate of the world.

I ALWAYS vote you little twerp! It's not my fault the system is rigged!

He may have the experience, but he also has an inexperienced fundamentalist dimwit as his running mate. One who opposes abortions EVEN IN THE CASE OF RAPE. Someone who would probably set back the feminist cause by decades. And somebody who would wind up being in one of the most powerful political seats on the planet should Senator McCain pop his clogs in the next 4 years. And yes, I'd be saying exactly the same thing if she was a he. Don't start.Even if I didn't already swing to the left, I'd be voting Obama/Biden for that reason alone. The less influence the religious right have on the running of America the better. If I lived in the US. Which I don't.

There are several other candidates as well, though you would never know it, and if I was an American I would be looking at them. These two have been put there by the same people and are merely offering different versions of more of the same. The hype surrounding Obama is truly astonishing and disturbing considering his wish to increase the size of the military, put more troops into Afghanistan and last years call to bomb Pakistan. Doesn't sound like change to me.

Mischief Night is the night before Halloween. We had a car brought in here with every panel dented and every window smashed on the 31st. Mischief indeed. On a relevant topic. Mock the Week, Frankie Boyle on Sarah Palin; 'She claims to be Pro life AND pro hunting, isn't that a bit like being a butcher AND a vet?'.

It's all relative innit? Just got back from Boston - that's Mass. and not Lincs. - and the amiable guy we stayed with, all American democrat Larry (no, not Neild) and his exiled Scouse missus Bernie, sagely declared that even Obama would be considered stolidly right wing and conservative if transferred into the rough and tumble of British politics.

younger than twiggy anywayNovember 4th 2008.

Is this even debatable? McCain is too old, too conservative, too much of the Bush camp, and has already shown how bad his judgement is by his choice of running mate. A woman who stands for everything narrow minded and moronic in American society, who is so shallow that she wears clear non-prescriptions spectacles to make her look like she has the brain cells she clearly does not possess. America lost half the plot when it elected an aging b-list actor as its president so many years ago, a man that knew sweet f...all about domestic and foreign policy. I do not think the American people will shred the other half of their credibility by supporting McCain.

He's a cutie!! That's what'll win it, innit?

I was talking about the recent tradition of teens causing mischief on Halloween Eve. Ask a teenager of today when mischief night is. They won't mention 'Yankee imperialist traditions' or 'papist gunpowder plotters' but they might say 'is the night before Alloween like mate, don't yer know anyfin yer muppet?'. But I admit I stand corrected on the 'original' Mischief night, of which I wasn't speaking.

AnonymousNovember 4th 2008.

So by your reckoning the new fad for stabbing and shooting each other among youths is a 'tradition' then?

DigNovember 4th 2008.

Is that comment aimed at me? It doesn't have any relevance to what I said about what kids call 'Mizzy night' which is the night before Halloween.

A TeenagerNovember 4th 2008.

Eh Dig lad. Mischief night is every night la! Outside the offy, askin' people to go in an gerrus some ciggies or a bottle of cider. Is right kidda! I'm just a victim though mate. It's the f***in' Yankee imperialists, and them Powderpape plotists with guns lad. They' re makin' me do their traditions like, you know warra mean mate? I don't wanna do it though mate, I wanna do Duck Apple night like me owl fella used to do in Risley, burrav never had an apple like, so as doan even know how te cook dem or where to rob dem from.

R. A. MateNovember 4th 2008.

Eh, mate, yer can rob off some chezzies from Tezzy's and roast 'em an a burning car! Boss!

YouneverknowNovember 4th 2008.

Scousekraut you old cynic, allow your heart to feel a little hope. You are quick to point to the negatives in Obama but, on the bright side, the president elect says he is willing to meet the leaders of Iran, Cuba, Syria, North Korea and Venezuela without preconditions in his first year in office, will close down Guantanamo and restore habeas corpus, provide affordable, accessible healthcare for all Americans, bring about an 80 per cent in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, oh, and here's what he says on the Bush administration's endorsement of torture: 'Torture is how you create enemies, not how you defeat them. Torture is how you get bad information, not good intelligence. Torture is how you set back America's standing in the world, not how you strengthen it. It's time to tell the world that America rejects torture without exception or equivocation. It's time to stop telling the American people one thing in public while doing something else in the shadows. When I am president America will once again be the country that stands up to these deplorable tactics'.Yes, having talked the talk Obama must now walk the walk but at least give the man a chance. Anyway, Scousekraut, I thought you were a nazi?

I liked Jon Stewart's comment on The Daily Show last Wednesday: "Sarah Palin has been tagged and allowed back into the wilds of Alaska."
