Mere Golf Club to get £15m refurb

Cheshire-based Pochin Construction has been awarded a contract worth £15m to carry out a refurbishment and extension to Mere Golf & Country Club.

The project, which will be carried out in two phases, will see the conversion and extension of an existing stable block to form a new five star-spa and leisure facility. The new spa will offer specialist treatment rooms and beauty treatments. Pochin will also build a new luxury swimming pool at the club.

Pochin will demolish part of the existing structure together with the existing North Lodge, which was previously used as staff accommodation, as well as carrying out alterations to the exit route to the A556. The first phase is already underway and is scheduled to be finished by late December.

The second phase comprises the construction of an extension to house 81 new luxury bedrooms. This phase includes the demolition of the old leisure area and will involve the refurbishment of a large portion of the existing building. Pochin will also carry out external works to the new retaining walls, pathways and additional landscaped areas. The second phase will commence once the initial phase is finished and is schedule for completion by February 2012.

Mark Boler, owner and chief executive of the club, said: “This is an exciting phase in Mere’s history and I am delighted to be working with Pochin to create what we hope will become the North West’s number one golf and leisure destination resort. Once complete the club will be re-launched as The Mere Golf Resort and Spa.”

Antony Pochin, business strategy director at Pochin Construction, said: “Mere Golf & Country Club is popular with golf enthusiasts across Cheshire and has built a reputation for being one of the most prestigious leisure developments in the region. This investment will elevate the club to a new level, and in turn, offer facilities that were not previously available to members.”
