Tue July 6: Schools schemes bite dust; siege on Breck Road; council chops top brass and Joe Cole for Liverpool?

Published on July 6th 2010.

SCHEMES to transform more than 50 schools across Merseyside bit the dust yesterday when the Government axed a £55bn rebuilding scheme.
In March, Liverpool council announced that the then Labour government had backed its plan to address nearly 4,000 surplus places and replace old buildings with “first- class education facilities”.

Only two potential Liverpool projects, the upgrade of De La Salle Academy and Enterprise South Liverpool Academy, in Garston, remain on the table.

POLICE were today hunting a masked gunman who shot at two men in Anfield as customers in the nearby Georgeson's car dealership forecourt stood just yards away.
Horrified witnesses told how the attacker pursued his two victims along Anfield’s Breck Road at around 7pm yesterday.

A siege then developed at a flat above the Stadium pub. Two men - thought to be the gunman’s targets - eventually surrendered at 11.30pm.

LIVERPOOL council has offered voluntary redundancy to its top 80 managers earning more than £60,000 in a bid to shave between £5m and £6m off the wage bill.
The council said applications will only be approved when it is in the best financial interests of the council and deliver “real savings”.

Council leader Joe Anderson said the move was in response to the “huge financial challenges” facing the organisation and was designed to protect front line jobs.

New Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is reportedly hoping to convince free agent Joe Cole to join the Merseyside club.
The 28-year-old recently parted ways with Chelsea after his contract at Stamford Bridge came to an end, and he is now free to talk to any club he chooses.
