Friday May 7: Council runs out of paper but it's a clean swipe for Labour

Published on May 7th 2010.

Luciana Berger has won the hotly contested Wavertree seat after crushing Lib Dem Colin Eldridge last night, increasing the party's majority by 2,000.
Her rival, who stood down from the council to fight the seat, polled fewer votes than in 2005.

The seat had been the Lib-Dems’ number one target in the North West. Miss Berger said: "I am absolutely delighted. I feel overwhelmed if not slightly surprised.”

Debi Jones has been defeated in the Sefton Central seet by Labour newcomer Bill Esterson.
But Mr Esterson, who until yesterday was a sitting councillor in Medway in Kent, took the seat with a majority of 3,862. He took 20,307 votes. Mrs Jones had 16,445 and Liberal Democrat Richard Clein was on 9,656.

The dad-of-two moved his family from the South East to Maghull for the campaign. He said today his first priority will be to "build a decent family life here in Sefton".

A "thorough review" is to be carried out by the Electoral Commission after a polling station in Wavertree ran out of ballot papers.
Voters had to wait at the Dunbabin Road station on Thursday as more papers were delivered.

In other areas people were turned away from polling stations because of long queues. But in Liverpool it was an unexpected high turn-out that led to a ballot paper shortage.

Returning officer Colin Hilton, the city's chief executive, apologised for the problem, but insisted everyone who wanted to vote "had the opportunity to do so".
