The Nifty 250: A sharp look at the news in so many words

Friday 30 July: Bionic cervix; Anderson throws weight behind Wirral Waters; PC found guilty of killing Searcher son; Captain America cameras roll

Published on July 30th 2010.

DOCTORS at Liverpool Women's Hospital have performed a minor miracle on a couple who had four miscarriages and lost one premature baby.
Janet Walker and Graham Lobb, who live in Windermere, were about to give up trying for a baby. But Janet was fitted with a bionic cervix and she recently gave birth to Ainka.

The cervix allowed Janet to carry Ainka to 37 weeks, when she gave birth by caesarean section.

COUNCILLOR Joe Anderson has thrown his weight behind the 18m sq ft, £4.5bn Wirral Waters project ahead of Wirral Council's planning committee meeting next week to decide the project's fate.
The Liverpool City Council leader met Cllr Jeff Green - his oppo at Wirral Council - and Peel Holdings' development director Lindsey Ashworth to offer his support to the scheme.

A POLICE officer was found guilty of causing death by careless driving, killing the son of Searcher's pop star Mile Pender.
PC Stephen Hulse, 48, of Alt Road, Formby, drove a maroon Ford Mondeo straight onto the far right hand lane on the A570 Rainford bypass on June 2 last year, straight into the path of Nathan Prendergast, 39, of Waterloo. The dead man was riding a Honda motorcycle at nearly 60mph and crashed into the back of PC Hulse’s car while it was travelling at just 21mph. He died two days later.

Sentence, at Preston Crown Court, was adjourned until August 27.

SCENES from the Hollywood blockbuster about comic book hero Captain America will be shot in Liverpool.
Filming for Captain America: The First Avenger, starring Samuel L Jackson, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Evans, is due to start in autumn using Liverpool locations and also Manchester and London.
