Woman dies in Primark fall

A POLICE investigation is under way after a 57-year-old woman died after plunging more than 80ft in the Church Street Primark store.

Officers were called to the store at 6pm by paramedics.  The woman was found at the bottom of escalators on the ground floor surrounded by shocked onlookers

She had been seen moments before by a balcony next to the escalators on the third floor.

A male doctor who was in the area at the time treated the woman at the scene before paramedics arrived.

She was taken in a critical condition to the Royal University Liverpool Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

A North West Ambulance spolesman  said: “The woman suffered a traumatic cardiac arrest at the scene and was treated by paramedics.

“She was taken to hospital in a critically ill condition.”

A post mortem will be carried out in due course to establish a cause of death.

Detectives are speaking to witnesses and viewing CCTV to establish the full circumstances of the incident. Anyone with any relevant information should call St Anne Street CID on 0151 777 4065 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The incident is the second major fall in the store. In 2008, just days after it opened, a three-year-old girl slipped through a gap by the third-floor escalator. She survived multiple injuries including a broken leg and arm.

UPDATE: The woman had been named as Mrs Susan Wood of Kirkby.

A police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is ongoing. The coroner has been notified that there are no suspicious circumstances.

In a tribute, Mrs Wood's family released this statement:

"On behalf of all our mum Susan's family and friends we just want to say how devastated we are for our tragic loss of a beloved sister to Phil, Tony, Jo, Rob, Si and Keith; a lovely mum to Clare and Hannah; doting nan to Chloe, Caitlin, Daisey and Violet; loving wife to Phil; adored mother-in-law to Gary and Darryl; and fun aunt to all her nieces and nephews.

"Missed already but will forever be loved and remembered.

"Rest in peace Mum."
