To Manchester!

Cheer all round as go-ahead given to speedy electrified line from Liverpool

To Manchester!

MERSEYTRAVEL has welcomed Government plans to invest £100million in the region’s rail network, slashing travel times from Liverpool to Manchester.

The benefits to Merseyside and the wider region cannot be underestimated. It is a key economic and arterial route into two major regional economies so the case is for electrification was always a strong one

Transport Minister Sadiq Khan visited Lime Street Station to share the news that the line will be upgraded and electrified, taking the journey time between the conurbation’s two major economic drivers to 30 minutes.

The four-carriage trains will be air-conditioned and will travel at 90mph – instead of the 75mph top-speed achieved by the current diesel trains, which can take over an hour to crawl between the two cities.

The minister met the team that has lobbied hard for the move, including Riverside MP Louise Ellman, Councillor Mark Dowd, chairman of Merseytravel, Councillor Chris Blakeley, chairman of Merseytravel’s rail committee and Neil Scales, Merseytravel’s chief executive.

Work will begin immediately and take around four years to complete.

Councillor Dowd, said: “This is something we have been pushing for, for a very long time and we are delighted that the Government has listened. This investment is absolutely vital to the region; to the public, to business and to the economy.

“Electrification of the line will mean shorter travel times, more regular services, less breakdowns and cleaner, greener trains. The benefits for the millions of passengers on this line will be tremendous.”

Councillor Chris Blakeley said: “The benefits to Merseyside and the wider region cannot be underestimated. It is a key economic and arterial route into two major regional economies so the case is for electrification was always a strong one.”

Work on the Liverpool-to-Manchester route will be carried out in two phases, to minimise disruption during the installation of electric cables and possible alterations to tunnels, bridges and stations.

Newton-le-Willows to Liverpool will form the second phase. The Lime Street to Bootle Branch junction, and Earlestown East to Newton-le-Willows sections, are already electrified.

“There have been complaints for a long time about the time it takes to travel the journey between Manchester and Liverpool, said Louise Ellman, “as well as poor carriages on the lines, and complaints about overcrowding and unreliability."This is modernising the line, speeding up the journey into Liverpool, and is part of our regeneration."

Britain has fallen far behind other countries in electrifying services, with just 33 per cent of the network upgraded. No major work has taken place since the electrification of the East Coast Main Line, way back in the late 1980s.
