Something for the weekend – 5/10/07

It's a cracker
It's not even Bonfire night so what the hell would Guy Fawkes make of this? A British Fireworks Championships…with music?

This weekend, over the course of three evenings, six of the UK'S elite professional firework companies will illuminate the Southport skyline with musical displays that will use over half a tonne of fireworks and send sparks flying 600ft into the air.

All of this takes place over The Marine Lake in King Gardens – the setting no doubt helping to justify its nomination for The Mersey Partnership Annual Tourism Award: Best Tourism Experience 2006/07

Firework boffs battling for the coveted titles include Phoenix Fireworks, who regularly work on London Eye, New Year's Eve Fireworks, and Pyromania Displays whose celebrity clients include none other than Alan Partridge! Jurassic Park!

British Firework Championships, Friday 5th – Sunday 7th October. The Promenade, Southport (Marine Lake, King Gardens). 7pm – 10pm (displays 8:15pm and 8:45pm each night). £5 on the gate; £4 in advance. 01704 533333

Sketchy plan
Pencil in the dates and get your sketch books at the ready. The Big Draw starts this weekend and there’s plenty to pull in the crowds and get the creative juices flowingThe Big Draw is an annual event that encourages adults and children to express creativity through drawing. Over 1,500 events are held nationwide, aiming to make drawing a fun and accessible pastime. With 18th century masters, giant spiders and legendary life models, there’s no shortage of inspiration at National Museums Liverpool’s events:

Tomorrow: Stimulate your senses with treasures from Japan, Tibet and Vietnam in Mysteries of the East at Weston Discovery Centre, World Museum Liverpool, 2-4pm.

This much is true
Or to cut a long story short, former Spandau Ballet frontman,Tony Hadley has been making music since the late seventies, and has been going solo since 1990. During this time, he has established himself as a successful solo artist and in 2003 won ITV’s Reborn in the USA. Tomorrow night, Saturday, he's appearing at the Pacific Road Arts Centre, Birkenhead where he'll be wowing the ladies with those new romantic songs of old and a bit of crooning from today.

Tony Hadley, Pacific Road Arts Centre, Birkenhead. 7pm. Call 0151 647 0752. Tickets £20/£18.
