Something For The Weekend – July 27-29

Full Brazilian
If you can’t escape England’s misery, you may as well pretend you’re in the tropics. The New Picket this weekend hosts the Liverpool leg of TrocaBrahma 07, a festival that is designed to celebrate the spirit of Brazil through a brand of beer and is simultaneously taking place in London and Glasgow.Nonetheless, the Picket will see the crème de la crème of emerging and established UK and Brazilian talent collaborating and showing utter disregard for Mother Nature and her rain clouds. You may have already heard of the British talent on offer such as Ben Westbeech and Gilles Peterson who is hosting Friday's show. But Tita Lima, Os Mutantes and their South American compatriots are equally enthralling, and the clash of British and Brazilian talent should guarantee a mesmerising few nights are had by all.
TrocaBrahma: Friday-Sunday, July 27-29. The New Picket, New Bird Street (off Jamaica Street) Price: £14. 7pm-late

Dying to take you away…
Roll up! Roll up for the history tour! The Magical History tour that is – a brand new exhibition which will “take visitors on a fast paced, dynamic journey of discovery”. Goodness.Told through the lives of Liverpudlians through the ages, this particular version traces Liverpool’s expansion as a port city and covers the city's cultural impact, epitomised around the world by The Beatles. The tour also promises to answer all the questions that have plagued people for years, such as the origins of the Pool – a muddy river inlet that gave the city its name, and how donning pyjamas to go shopping (below) was first documented when King John awarded the city its charter in 1207.Magical History Tour Sat 28th July 2007-27th September 2009, Merseyside Maritime Museum. Price: Free. 0151 478 4499

The last resort
You were forewarned last week that you would be hearing more about the very happening Brouhaha Festival, so it would be plain wrong not to inform you of the latest hubbub. This weekend, all eyes turn north, to The Southport International Street Festival. It takes place on Lord Street, around the arts centre, which will come to life with music, street theatre and carnival acts, concluding on Sunday with a grand carnival parade.Dancing Germans, Slovakian theatre performers and Cuban musicians will all be doing their bit, and that’s only for starters. It really is a rather unique opportunity to see some of the world’s most talented people on your doorstep. And how are you going to pass for a cultured vulture in 2008, unless you put in the groundwork now?Once again, it’s free. Just don’t blame us if the kids want to take up Palestinian break dancing (yes – that really does feature) and you all have to spend Saturday evening in Alder Hey.
Southport International Festival 28th/29th July, Lord Street. Price: Free
