Snapshot stories: HMS Liverpool

IT was the warmest day in Liverpool so far this year, and the warmest welcome too,HMS Liverpool which sailed up the Mersey this morning, arriving at the cruise terminal at 9am prompt.

The Cammell Laird-built Type 42 destroyer is one of just a handful still in service and will be decommissioned next year.

HMS Liverpool will be open to the public free of charge on Saturday and Sunday from midday to 4pm. She will be berthed there until Monday when she sails at 1pm.

During the weekend crew will be taking part in a variety of activities around the city and many will be attending football matches at both Anfield and Goodison. The Merseysiders on board will be spending time with their family and friends. A daughter of a member of the ship’s crew will be christened in the ship’s bell in keeping with maritime tradition.

The rest of the HMS Liverpool crew were “looking forward to exploring the city”. So keep an eye out for them and whatever you do don’t get involved with arm wrestling these burly Royal Navy men and women in any bars.

You know what happened to Oliver Reed.
