We always strive to bring you news straight from the horse's mouth but as nobody talks to a horse, of course, here's a National tip...

We thought about giving you a Grand National quiz or even interviewing the ghost of Red Rum. There wasn't time for any of that. So when Liverpool Confidential stumbled across John Lynch, professional racing punter, in the Master Chef on Renshaw Street late last night, we knew we were on to a winner.

A plate of poppadoms meant that he and brother Hugh were literally under starters orders, a reward after some very hard graft watching Van Der Graaf Generator at the Phil.

John had escaped the gig by pretending to go to the toilet, and it was with a faraway look in his eye that he spoke of the thundering of hooves. He wasn't referring to the audience members who followed his sharp exit, but reminding us of the noise that greets visitors to the big race meeting at Aintree, which runs until Saturday.

Ah, perchance did he have a tip for Confidential readers, something that they could put their lucky lucre on when the 4.15 on Saturday came around?

John was on form as he told us how this might be his only trip to Aintree this year. He and Hugh are big Steely Dan fans, he continued, but were hedging their bets, for now, on the £42 tickets for seats at the Sefton Summer Pops. The brothers reckoned they couldn't be guaranteed a grandstand view of their fave act and sadly shook their heads.

Yes! But never mind that. What about our tip?

John told us the big betting and the serious money would be spent by the pros on Thursday. The big dressing and the serious drinking would be done on “Ladies Day”, Friday, and the popular punt would be spent on Saturday, when 75,000 people are expected to turn up to the course and £250 million will be staked on the big race.

Fantastic. But what are we backing, John?

“I'll tell you when I'm leaving,” he replied mysteriously, and we followed him closely, lest he do another runner.

But he and we stayed the distance. It was late when we left, and there are no guarantees in life, but if you fancy an each way flutter at 40/1, have a look at Royal Auclair.*

*Liverpool Confidential will not be answering the phone on Monday, should anything happen to this horse, or your bets, to spoil our story.
