Selfridges to open in Liverpool

Can it be true that the high profile department store is to open in Liverpool? Well....

Selfridges to open in Liverpool

YOU have got to be a cool customer to shop at this store, and no doubt the Duke of Westminster and the people at Liverpool One would see this latest signing to Europe's biggest retail development as the ice on the cake.

It is part of our second and last (in case you thought this was turning into the web equivalent of That's Life) batch of pictures of shops and businesses with plain daft names that have been the preserve of hairdressers since time immemorial.

Our original story (click here for a reminder) proved enormously popular and attracted thousands of reads as well as many of your own comments and suggestions of shop signs that you had spied in your travels around Merseyside and beyond.

The Sellfridges here is actually in Hackney, and it's part of an email and messageboard item that's been doing the rounds for a bit, but we couldn't resist letting that get in the way of a good excuse for another few snaps we missed first time round, or as a lead-in to announcing the prize winner (a £50 bar tab) of our first competition.

So Leon Kaye, step forward. You win much booze in a smoke-free pub of your choice, hopefully one with an interesting name, for alerting us to the poodle parlour in Booker Avenue, Doggy Style (picured below).

Since then, we have also spotted a convenience store in Queens Drive, Walton, Biblically called Bread and Wine (“because that's what people come in most for”, according to the owner). Not forgetting he former Tito's restaurant on Parr Street, which has dropped an O, and the greeting and gift shop in Ainsdale village that invites you to "Avacardo".

Check them out, and a couple more which also include some signs sent to the Confidential mobile phone (apologies for the quality).

So happy April 1. Unless, of course, you know different...

There used to be a dog grooming parlour in north east Liverpool somewhere called 'Wuff Cuts' - which is rather more refined than that coarse ruffian Kaye's suggestion that no doubt has kept many a bar-room in raucous mirth!

You've missed the Cockwell pub on Breck Road - formerly the Cockwell Inn - but they dropped the Inn about 6yrs ago!And what about the Shagor takeaway in Woolton Village?

Actually I think it was spelt 'WOOF CUTS'
