The MTV Europe music awards roll into town in November with stars from all over the planet fighting for the biggest gongs in the music business.
Most of the intrigue has surrounded the nominations for ‘Best Act Ever’ and it was no surprise to see the likes of Britney Spears and U2 in there, arguably the biggest artist and the biggest band in the world respectively.
However, Liverpool Confidential are delighted to announce that Merseyside’s very own Rick Astley is also in the running for the award. Honest, he really is.
In the late 80s, the pop hero from Newton-le-Willows had a number one in 16 countries with the catchyborderingonfuckingannoying ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. It’s only now evident that the song was actually about his MTV nomination dream.
The singer has enjoyed a recent renaissance thanks largely to an Internet phenomenon known as 'rickrolling' in which web users are tricked into watching Astley’s hit song by posting it under the name of other popular video titles.
The craze became so popular that on April 1, 2008, YouTube pranked its own users by making every single featured video on the front page a 'Rickroll'.And now Rickrolling mania could pave the way for Astley being declared as the ‘Best Act Ever’ in the awards ceremony at the Arena on November 6.
With support in very high places (see below) we've got a feeling that Rick may just do it. You can vote for him here.
OK, we mean here.
Good on ya Rick. We’re all rickrolling with delight.
