Merseyrail named as top UK operator

Controller bigs up enviable 'track record'

Merseyrail named as top UK operator

WE'VE had the Oscars and the Brits, and now the limelight has been thrown on the glittering world of... trains.

Merseyrail has scooped the top honour at the rail industry’s very own awards night, beating big-name players to be crowned UK’s operator of the year.

It is the first time Merseyrail has won the prestigious gong and builds on its recent success as a high performer in the biannual National Rail Passenger Survey and the annual Which? train poll, as well as on the plaudits won at the North of England Excellence Awards in November.

Merseyrail is constantly listed as a top performer, and cited as the biggest underground rail system outside of London, with a 95% rating for reliability and punctuality. The system carried more than 110,000 passengers every weekday, running over 800 trains a day.

Shortlisted were First TransPennine Express, East Midlands Trains  and First Hull Trains.

A contigent of top people from Merseyrail travelled, no doubt on Virgin, to the National Rail Business Awards bash at the Hilton in Park Lane.

Alan Chaplin, interim managing director at Merseyrail, commented: “Merseyrail has an enviable track record for winning awards, and it’s great to be recognised yet again.  We remain determined to work hard, providing an excellent service for customers. This means constantly appraising and challenging the way we do things, innovating and applying best practice.”

Having looked at a rather short shortlist, I'd say there wasn't much competition. This trend to hand "plaudits" to people who are paid to do a job, is a worrying aspect of today's society. As for having a jolly down in London in times of "Austerity", this will really please the 5% and Joe Riley, who are already unhappy with their performance.

Merseyrail can't help but look good. Their only competition is the overpriced, smelly, unreliable buses, or the overpriced, infrequent ferries that no longer connect with the bus services. Merseyrail is my preferred form of transport. At least their trains don't stop without warning in the middle of nowhere and you are kept waiting twenty minutes while they change the driver, as happens with the buses.

The bus companies also change a route if they don't think it is profitable enough. And the drivers boot you off for not carrying the several lbs.-worth of change required to pay the exact fare

One key difference between Merseyrail and the other train operating companies is that it operates under a contract (to Merseytravel) rather than a straight money-grubbing franchise. Although credit is due to the very competent (Dutch) part-owners, we must also be grateful to Merseytravel, which survived the abolition of the County Council and continues to show how local authorities can work together within the region.

I'm rather concerned, there hasn't been any comment from JB. Would someone check his doorstep to see if the milk is mounting up.

Don't be daft, Mother has continued to lactate for nigh on 55 years now and our resident keyboard warrior has no need for such comestibles.

If you happen to see him, tell him his pancakes have gone cold.
