Hello to Larry “the Legend”

Journalist, political commentator, broadcaster and PR man Larry Neild writes exclusively for Liverpool Confidential from Monday. But first he would like a quick word....

Hello to Larry “the Legend”

WOW I’ve migrated to Liverpool Confidential. My weekly column in the Liverpool Daily Post is no more, but my verbal meanderings will continue courtesy of the internet.

There will be some in high places who may well breathe a sigh of relief at the absence of my regular slot in the paper. I have been called many unkind things over the years, though not often by a group I fondly call – and I include myself in this grouping – the Little People.

Am I an enemy of the state? Of course not. But I am an enemy of the state of Liverpool at times. Am I a critical friend? Yes sort of, but I prefer to call myself a friendly critical observer.

I regard myself as a barefoot journo (have you seen the price of shoes these days in the Met Quarter), and I like to keep my feet firmly on the ground.

It seems in this city you are either friend or foe, with us or against us, with no space in the middle for those with strong opinions who fall into neither camp. But there’s more to life than black and white, and our decision makers need at times to be told a few home truths, or at least given food for thought.

I don’t write for effect, saying things I don’t mean or believe for the impact. Actually, as I walk the streets with Ferdie, my faithful companion, I mull things over. I don’t vote so I’m in no political camp and indeed in my time in Liverpool I can say I have voted (in alphabetical order) Conservative, Green, Labour and Liberal Democrat.

This is an important – and an expensive year – for Liverpool, and the Little people” will have to pay the price. If I’m wrong (which won’t be often, if at all), don’t hesitate to tell me.

My views, usually correct as they are, will never be set in stone, more like set in a multi-coloured jelly. So convince me if you think I am a farthing short of a penny. Let the War of Words commence.

Larry Neild presents CityTalk 105.9's weekly political programme, The Commons Touch, every Sunday at noon.

It's always nice to see a new face on the Merseyside media scene. I look forward to reading your, no doubt, pertinent opinions, Mr Neild. And hats off to Liverpool Confidential for hiring a new columnist, especially one who is so provocatively upfront about being "on the other bus". I look forward to hearing stories about Mr Neild's "companion", Ferdie. Although hopefully not too explicit, thank you very much. I get quite enough of that on Torchwood.

'Leg end' Larry defects to Liverpool Confidential? Does this mean that the Daily Post will become an Echo-like lickspittle to the City Council and the Capital of Cock-ups Company?

Hey does this mean the old git will be taking me on more walkies. Great innit. I mean a whippet needs his exercise and if I wrap up well I can walk while he talks (to himself).
