Retired Belle Vue greyhounds are going on 'first dates' with potential owners

THE world’s second fastest land animal is to play a key part in a one-off "speed-walk dating" event to match retired greyhounds with new owners.

Belle Vue Greyhound Stadium, which runs the Belle Vue Retired Greyhound Trust charity, is hoping that retired greyhounds looking for love will win the hearts of potential new owners after a ‘walk in the park’ first date – and is providing special running shoes, tailor-made for walking greyhounds, to make sure first-time owners keep up.

While the shoes are a bit of fun there is a serious message behind the initiative – organisers hope the invitation to a walk in the park with a new friend will demonstrate first-hand what wonderful pets these dogs make. Throughout April the charity will be inviting people to help out at the kennels by volunteering as a dog walker and asking those thinking of adding a pet to the household to consider one of the world’s oldest breeds.

Although the track doesn’t own any of the greyhounds that race there, Belle Vue Stadium set up its own registered charity after spending years and thousands of pounds supporting retired dogs. For years the track has also operated, in effect, a ‘pension plan’ for the dogs, which requires racing owners to pay into a welfare fund.

Now, in order to make sure that this beautiful breed gets the attention it deserves from those looking for a re-home dog, the track is inviting people to volunteer for walking duties to get to know greyhounds a little better.

Marketing manager at Belle Vue Stadium, Sharon Hardy, said: “While it’s true that greyhounds are really fast the reason they make such good house pets is that they are incredible couch potatoes once they’re home.

“Just two 20 minute walks per day is all a greyhound needs to keep it happy and healthy. They are sprinters by nature so there’s nothing they like better than a good long snooze after a walk.

“Not all racing greyhounds need to be re-homed, there are, of course, owners who choose to keep their dogs as part of the family once their racing days are done.

“For those that do need to find a family, a 20 minute walk is just a first date. Our welfare officers work really hard to make sure dogs and their people are well matched, including home checks, but we think that getting a little closer to these beautiful dogs and finding out what softies they are is a terrific start,” said Sharon.

A little bit about Jumbo, the dog in the picture:

Jumbo (Jumbos Cool was his racing name) was born in August 2005 and is looking for a loving home. He ran 62 races at Belle Vue over the hurdles and was very successful. He won 16 races in fine form. He is an active dog for his age. He appears to talk to you with little whimpering sounds as if he is listening and is taking notice of what you say. He’s not a big barker.

Jumbo is very friendly and affectionate with people but having been in a kennel environment all his life and having little contact with other breeds of dogs, he can be unsociable and gets very excited when he meets them for the first time. We think he’ll overcome this in time but he may be better with someone who has had experience owning a dog before.
