Liverpool is brilliant, says city council

THE council's annual Liverpool City Centre survey found that seven out of ten people believed the city has improved during the last year.

“There is no doubt that Liverpool One has had a major effect on the way the city is viewed but there are many other aspects of the city centre which are also impressing."

The survey, which interviewed almost 1,500 people, found 96 per cent were feeling 'optimistic' about the future of the city centre; 96 per cent also rated the retail experience as 'positive' and 88 per cent believe there is a good range of entertainment on offer in the city.

The results also found that eight out of ten people think the police are dealing with anti-social behaviour and crime issues although some people commented on the increase of drinking on the street, begging and ‘young people hanging around’.

To improve the city, the public suggested more seating, better quality green spaces and extra public toilets.

“This is the most consistently positive survey of the city centre we have ever had," said councillor Joe Anderson, leader of the city council. “The message coming out of it loud and clear is that the city centre is generally regarded as safe and vibrant with great shops and entertainment.

“There is no doubt that Liverpool One has had a major effect on the way the city is viewed but there are many other aspects of the city centre which are also impressing. In fact when they were asked what they would like to change about the city centre more than 40 per cent could think of nothing to change.”

Ged Gibbons, chief executive of City Central BID, added: “The findings of this annual survey speak volumes for City Central BID and its members, not only reflecting the vibrancy, cleanliness and safety of our city centre, but it is also hugely satisfying that Liverpool has consolidated its position in the top five UK retail destinations, especially given the current economic and social environment.”

Liverpool city centre recently retained its Purple Flag, a national award which recognises a well managed city centre.

The survey which was commissioned by the City Council, Liverpool Vision, Merseytravel, Bid and Citysafe.

The Liverpool city centre has been safe and vibrant for decades. Liverpool One is good if you've money to spend in fashion chainstores, but where are the specialist shops, the independent businesses, the stylish cafés?

The crowds have moved to Liverpool One but the rents in the now-deserted older areas of the centre are too high for fledgling businesses catering for niche markets.
