A little bit of oomph

Music and passion were always the fashion, so nowadays where are people in the know heading for that little extra fix of style and sophistication?

A little bit of oomph

To the burlesque, of course; the movement that is shaking the bones of every red blooded popinjay in town. Scan the entertainment listings and you will see it taking hold: London now has a dazzling variety of upmarket nights in the fashionable hotels, clubs and cocktail bars.

Top of the bill is old-school glamour, followed by glitter, gowns and music, from romantic to raunchy, and a floorshow that brings elegance together with charm and fun.

Dita Von Teese and Immodesty Blaize are two of the goddesses on the national scene. Here in Liverpool we have our own take: Miss Hedy Heights and Miss Kitty Bang Bang; next week there's a chance to see them in action when the Retro Burlesque is launched at the Royal Court.

Taking place at the art deco downstairs bar in the theatre “a stylish setting to rival any in London,” says organiser Liz Lacey, this regular event promises to bring an extra dimension to Liverpool's night life.

Liz said: “The audience is more inclined to dress up in the finery displayed by anyone from Edwardian dandies to 1950s pin-up girls. The movers and shakers of the fashion scene, the arts and theatre world, and the more discerning entrepreneur, are all beating a path to the velvet-covered door of the burlesque show. “

Is that you, dear reader?

“Retro Burlesque will herald the beginning of a more graceful way to spend an evening,” adds Liz. “A mixture of music, 20s and 30s inspired singers, fancy costumes, alluring dancers, and an atmosphere in which, as the song says, Anything Goes..."

Curtain up at 6.30pm, Thursday March 22. Tickets at £15 (available at the Royal Court box office on 0870 787 1866), includes a drink and delicious canapés.
