The new up-dos

Sam McKnight, Global Stylist Ambassador for Pantene Pro-V, reports the hair trends from Milan Fashion Week

Published on September 30th 2010.

The new up-dos

Frresh and fun
The hair look: Fresh and fun

The Show: Moschino Cheap and Chic

The Inspiration: Loose buns all tied and twisted up with beautiful bright silk scarves."The Moschino Cheap and Chic girl has this crazy, young, colourful vibe," says Sam McKnight.

Get the look:
1. Sam McKnight advises preparing hair by firstly washing and conditioning using Pantene Pro-V Aqua Light Shampoo and Conditioner to create the perfect base. "Key to the look is healthy-looking hair to build a base for the loose bun," says Sam who then started by working Pantene Pro-V Volume & Body Mousse through from roots to ends.

2. Next, blow-dry hair using a large round brush, concentrating on building volume at the roots by lifting hair vertically from the head. To create texture at the crown, back-brush the hair from a few inches away from the head to the roots.

3. Then, create a ponytail using a no-snag elastic band secured a few inches away from the head, so that the hair hangs loosely around it. Twist the ends of the ponytail and pin into a bun. "The overall effect should appear soft and light," says Sam. "This isn't a tightly pulled look."

4. To accessorise the style, Sam twisted Moschino Cheap & Chic scarves into ropes, then either wound them around the head like an Alice-band, coiled them around buns, or twisted them under and over the buns.

5. Finally, Sam gave a nod to the energy and movement of this look by pulling wisps of hair loose to give the effect of a soft, light flyaway style.

The hair look: Modern low ponytail

The Show: Brioni S/S 2011

The Inspiration: “I took my inspiration for the hair from the surroundings. We did a textured ponytail with volume at the crown and back of head. It all looked very fresh, elegant and contemporary." says Sam. The S/S 11 Brioni show took place in the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, which is a huge, white airy space with wonderful daylight.

Get the look:
1. On a base of clean and lightly conditioned hair, achieved using Pantene Pro-V Aqua Light Shampoo and Conditioner, Sam created a ponytail style with modern volume and texture. “The idea was to have the impression of a neat shape that had been loosened,” he says.

2. Sam began by working Pantene Pro-V Volume and Body Magnifying Mousse through from roots to ends to help build body and add texture. “Blow dry the hair back from the front hairline and lift the hair while drying to achieve maximum volume,” says Sam.

3. Then, hair was straightened from the roots to ends then allowed to fall into a natural parting, two inches from the hairline towards the crown.

4. Next, Sam backcombed the hair at the crown and the back of the head to create a rounded profile and a textured, dry finish, spraying with Pantene Pro-V Volume and Body Hairspray to maintain the volume.

5. Keeping the hair close to the head at the sides, Sam then gathered all the hair into a low ponytail held at the nape of the neck with a no-snag elastic band, so that the lengths of the hair hung straight down. And finally, to add the finishing chic and contemporary twist, Sam teased the ponytail length with his hands to add texture and a more natural feel.

Bellisima bows
The hair look: Bellissima bows

The Show: Dsquared2 S/S 2011

The Inspiration: Intellectual-looking boys and girls with an unfussy attitude; dishevelled bow buns on girls, boyish girls with masculine side partings.

Get the look:
1. "The base of any great style is freshly washed and conditioned hair using Aqua Light Shampoo and Conditioner," says Sam. To build texture and volume with a glossy finish, Sam combed Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek Mousse through from the roots to the ends.

2. He then blow dried the hair back and away from the face using a paddle brush to keep hair smooth.

3. Allowing hair to fall into a natural parting, or creating a low side parting for the 'boyish' girls, Sam then caught hair into a ponytail, positioned just above the nape of the neck. To create a bow shape, Sam looped the length of the hair up and tied to secure the loop into the base of the pony tail using no-snag elastic.

4. The remaining length of the hair was looped round to complete the other side of the bow and pinned into the base of the ponytail to secure. Any remaining lengths were used to cover the centre of the bow.

5. The key to achieving Sam's signature 'Done, undone' look lies in making the style look as if the girls had done their hair themselves. So to complete the style, Sam pulled out loose tendrils of hair at the sides and then using his fingers, added texture to the bun by slightly teasing the hair.

the low loopp>The hair look: The low loop

The Show: Jaeger London

The inspiration: The collection for Jaeger London this season was built on the brand’s love for graphic simplicity and geometric lines. This formed the inspiration for the hair look, which appeared structured then softened, with hair being teased out from the ponytail.

Get the look:
1. Ensure hair is freshly washed, using Pantene Pro-V Aqua Shampoo and Conditioner. As Sam says: "Clean and conditioned hair is the base of any great style"

2. Work Pantene Pro-V Volume & Body Mousse through damp hair from roots to ends. "This builds body, reduces frizz and adds a gorgeous, healthy shine," says Sam.

3. Blow-dry hair, allowing it to fall naturally, brushing the hair back from the face to release the volume-enhancing benefits of the mousse

4. Gather the hair into a low, loose ponytail at the nape of the neck, looping the length up, and securing with snag-free elastic, leaving the ends free. "To condition dry ends, work some Pantene Pro-V Aqua Light Leave-In Treatment Spray onto the tips," advises Sam.

5. Finally, slightly loosen up the style, teasing some strands loose to create volume. Leave stray hairs around the hairline to fly free to achieve Sam's signature 'done, then undone' hair style, for a casual, modern effect.
