The Confidential Challenge: for him (part 6)

Week 9 – A Change in gears

Darren has dropped a few bombshells along the way during this challenge. No drinking after a period of time on the plan, training frequency increased on the last phase of training, to name but a few. The one he just about to drop I wasn’t prepared for, or was I?

Of course I was. He had been building Helen and I up to this point all along, introducing different aspects of the Elite Fitness Training 'Get Lean' Programme- unknown to us.

At first glance this programme looked harsh, but in reality it was a lot easier than having to plan my diet day to day. Unfortunately I can’t go into specifics of this top secret plan (message with self destruct in 20 seconds) but I can tell you that there are specific steps over certain days which we have been figured out for us over time.

This includes a strategic treat day and shake day out of the cycle of the eating plan. This is matched to certain types of training on the relative day and is worked out in an easy to follow regime that is already mapped out for us.

The regime has been “put in place to trick the body into burning fat, while strategically promoting elevating the resting metabolism.” Darren’s words, I’m not that clever.

Darren also updates our gym and kettle bell workouts at this point to maintain consistent progression without loosing muscles. We actually gain muscle while loosing fat very quickly, which is virtually unheard of- Gulp!

Due to my muscle gain and fat loss I’m actually burning more calories while i’m asleep which is a huge boost.

Changing body
My body has changed so much from week one to now- see my measurements below. You will see all the pictures in the end as my original pictures are a disgrace so I need to make sure the transformation from chunk to hunk is well and truly complete.

Waist: week one 110cm, week nine 98cm

Hips: week one 106cm, week nine 98cm

Neck: week one 43cm, week nine 40cm

Chest: week one 116cm, week nine 106cm

Two shoulders to lean on
However good these result may seem, I am still way off my goal of 12-14per cent body fat which will give me a chance of getting in Men’s Health mag.

This week was a real downer for me. I had only lost 5lb since my last weigh in two and half weeks ago, plus I’d only lost 1per cent body fat (although this could be my body's response to the fact im rather rubbish at hydrating myself– something im going to have to improve on), which is what I was really bothered about.

Darren told me to be cheerful as I had come down from 31per cent body fat to 23 per cent (12 per cent body fat loss is about 24lbs fat loss) which is an amazing feat in itself. However, I felt if I didn’t reach my goal I would see this whole thing as a failure. I set out to go from chunk to hunk and anything less is not acceptable in my eyes. I have to step up my game and make sure I stick to the program, plan my meals better and make sure im eating and drinking often enough.

After a big pep talk from Darren which was over one hour (patience of a saint this man has) and Helen ‘partner in crime’ Ramsbottom another hour, I started to feel better. They have both been a huge rock in this challenge as after all we are all in together- as a team. Without them both I would have crumbled ages ago.

This stresses again the importance and value of having Darren to lean on as an independent, expert personal trainer and a good friend too of course. The training and diet advice is one thing, but his online support is brilliant. I know he is launching a new online programme soon so watch out for this or register your interest here.

Please remember, I doing this for a great charity called Forever Manchester.
