Kimia Lip Contour Serum

Lynda Moyo speaks to Kimia founder Ian Dadash about the product that perfected Posh’s pout

Kimia Lip Contour Serum

If you happen to see Victoria Beckham pouting around Rossendale, it’s not a surprise visit to the popular dry ski slope, but possibly to relieve her dry lips at the HQ of local beauty brand, Kimia.

The fact that our products are oil based means that 100 per cent of each product benefits the skin, unlike creams where much of the formulation can be water, providing no benefit to the skin.

The company specialises in natural beauty products using what they describe as the ‘magic of nature’ and nothing else. Their brand is highly regarded by Mrs Beckham as well as other lip-loving celebrities including Geri Halliwell, Olivia Palermo, Kate Moss and Elle Macpherson. Lynda Moyo spoke to founder of Kimia, Ian Dadash, to find out more about this local magic potion…

LM: Kimia is used by celebs around the world. How did it come to be based in Rossendale?
I’ve lived in Manchester for years and it seemed only natural to set up the business in this area. Growing a skincare brand is extremely difficult and full of challenges. I feel the people of this area are used to challenges and therefore make great employees. As the brand grows, I recognise we may need to have a presence in major cities in the world. Having said that, I don’t think we would ever move the head office from the Rossendale Valley.

LM: Victoria Beckham is said to be a fan. Did you send her the product or did she come across it herself?
We have a very good friend of the brand who also happens to be very good friends with Victoria. She asked if we would be happy to give her a sample to try, which of course we were delighted to do.

LM: Victoria is known for her pout. How will Kimia have enhanced her trademark?
Victoria’s pout is perfect. Kimia Lip Serum will help to keep her skin supple, hydrated and protected from environmental damage to keep it perfect.

LM: How did you come up with the idea of creating natural beauty products?
A good friend of mine asked me to take a look at natural oil from a lady he dealt with called Hedva.

Hedva had pioneered a very special extraction process that can remove plant oils from plants previously almost impossible to extract from, following a trip to north America where she lived with a group of native Americans.

Their medicinal compounds come mainly from witch hazel, known for its healing and astringent properties, however Hedva noticed members of the tribe who were responsible for ‘mashing’ the witch hazel bark leaves and stems with their feet had almost perfect skin, because of the oil.

Together with my friend she set about developing a means of extracting the oil - something the bigger suppliers said was impossible. I was given a small sample of a facial oil developed and thought nothing of it, but gave it to women working in my office.

The results were astonishing. All the women in my office were desperate for more of the magic oil. I tested with a larger group of women with the same effect. From this, Kimia was born.

LM: What makes Kimia different to other skincare brands?
The way we extract some of our ingredients and the use of our unique witch hazel oil, which is far superior to the water-based witch hazel found in other products. We pride ourselves on our 100 per cent natural formulations.

When we say natural we truly mean natural. The fact our products are oil-based means 100 per cent of each product benefits the skin, unlike creams where much of the formulation can be water, providing no benefit to the skin.

Each ingredient will have a positive effect on the skin providing a three-pronged skin defence: hydration, healing and protection. This in turn helps reduce the visible signs of ageing.

LM: What’s the process of making a bottle of lip serum?
We extract the plant oils for the lip serum, which are then added to other ingredients, all of which are carefully chosen to ensure they are of the highest quality. We reject more oils at the quality stage than we approve. The final oils are carefully blended together and tested before stored to allow the blend to mature. Once the oil is ready, it’s filled and packed ready for sending to retailers.

LM: You openly list the ingredients on your website. Isn’t this giving the secret away?
We list the ingredients on our website to allow customers to see that we truly are natural. In the European Union, the full ingredient list must be printed on the pack anyway.

The true secret is in the way we extract the oils, the way we blend the ingredients together and the amounts of each ingredient used. It’s an art form in its own right.

LM: How do you justify the price? £44 seems steep for a serum.
It’s key to remember we are selling a highly active product, for use around the lip area where intensive treatment is needed and only a tiny amount of product is actually required - typically only a few drops. A bottle of the Kimia Lip Oil can last up to four months even used regularly. Take this into account and I think it’s a small price to pay for great skin.

LM: With the lip contour serum, how soon should users expect to see results and what improvements will they see?
Customers will feel an immediate softening and smoothing of the delicate area around the lips, after about 30 days of continuous use customers will see healthier more glowing skin with fine lines visibly reduced.

More products from the range

LM: What new products are you launching?
We have a large number of new products under development, two of which will be available in the next six months. The first is a 100 per cent natural cleanser, the second a natural body oil.

Kimia is available in Manchester at www.heaven-spa.co.uk or online at www.kimia.co.uk. For the full list of ingredients in Kimia products, click here.
