Beauty booty breakdown

Kiehl’s Lip Balm SPF 15 (£12 from Selfridges)

They say: This formula imparts a slight hint of colour and temporarily protects and helps relieve chapped or cracked lips. Helps protect lips from the drying effects of wind and cold weather. SPF 15 sunscreen provides UVA and UVB protection. Apply liberally to lips and allow excess to be absorbed

We say: The off-putting colour (ear wax yellow) isn't the best start to this gel, but once you've applied it, you have a healthy, translucent sheen. Keeps lips moist and smooth for longer than your average balm – good for use in sun-free Manchester as well as on your hols.

Our verdict: Worth the extra cost – more protection from the elements whether you're battling against wind, cold or sun.

Liz Earle New Mineral Sun Cream SPF20 (£6.50 from http://uk.lizearle.com)

They say: Perfect for all the family, our light, non-greasy mineral sun cream reflects rather than absorbs harmful UVB and UVA rays which can lead to skin damage and premature ageing.

We say: We prefer the cooling aftersun gel that goes with it – it smells wonderful, it's very refreshing, and it absorbs easily. In contrast, the sun cream is heavy, paste-like and hard work to rub in. It also felt a bit sticky on the skin.

Our verdict: Not one of Liz Earle's best products – we're not sure why it needs to be so thick when it's only SPF20.

Clarins Instant Blush Magic Colour (£16.50 from Clarins counters)

They say: Its subtle, glossy texture tints cheeks with a beautiful radiant glow.

We say: It’s as subtle as you make it, so be careful not to apply too much at first as you could end up looking like a clown. Once you manage to get the amount right (you only need a dab) your cheeks will have that pinched, rosy look. The pomade texture also adds a slight gloss so you can get a pregnancy glow, minus the baby.

Our verdict: It’s designed for cheeks but get real value for money from this product by using it on your lips and eyelids too.

Noveau Lashes Noir Mascara (£15.99 Harvey Nichols)

They say: Carefully developed to not only look incredible, it's also designed to stay that way come rain or shine. Noir Mascara gives you gorgeous, jet black, luscious lashes in no time. Just one coat of the quick-drying new formula is enough for a fantastic false-lash effect. And once you have achieved your perfect lashes, they stay perfect – all day long.

We say: We love, love, love the colour of this mascara. It is the blackest of black. In fact it’s only now that we realise all other black mascaras really aren’t that black at all. Despite the claims that it dries quickly, you will need to refrain from blinking hard for the first three minutes after applying, as it’s a very wet mascara. The finished look isn’t particularly voluminous but you will have beautiful spider leg, jet black lashes.

Our verdict: If your lashes are fair, this will really bring them out.

Emma Hardie Amazing Face Natural Lift and Sculpt Luxury Cleansing System (£39 from www.emmahardie.com)

They say: A complete cleansing and exfoliation system, which allows you to customise the treatment to meet the specific needs of your skin. Skin is left feeling clean, smooth and supple; never tight.

We say: An overall impressive cleansing kit. Those with dry skin will particularly enjoy these products as they really feel like they are feeding the skin. Those with oily skin might be a little apprehensive about using the cleansing balm as it is more like a very thick and greasy pomade. The rosehip exfoliating seeds combined with the cleansing balm create a brilliant face scrub that makes your skin feel like silk. You are in control of how intense you want the scrub to be by adding as little or as many rosehip seeds as you want. The face cloth tends to get grubby quite quickly and is probably the least necessary part of the kit.

Our verdict: Everything down to the packaging and smell screams luxury. A beauty bargain at £39.

Revlon Double Twist Mascara (£8.99 from Boots)

They say: Revlon’s Double Twist is a unique hybrid mascara. It features a 2-in-1 brush that combines the benefits of a traditional bristle brush for volume and the plastic moulded brush for definition. The result is huge volume and perfectly pretty definition all in one brush.

We say: They’re certainly right about the volume. Lashes seem at least three times thicker when using this mascara and the finished look brings to mind that drippy-eyed Twiggy look. The volume is down to the brush – which is much sturdier than other brushes – and the extremely thick texture of the mascara. Unfortunately it’s because it’s so thick that you can also expect to find yourself combing out a fair amount of clumps.

Our verdict: If you’re going to buy it, invest in a lash comb too.
