A dating site for adulterers

Lynda Moyo on the seedy site that boasts ‘an affair to remember or your money back’

A dating site for adulterers

Emptying my suitcase upon returning home from a recent trip to New York, I sifted through 30+ business cards I’d been given whilst there, only to realise that most of these were men, most of them had been given to me - not at networking events - but as I walked down the street minding my own business, and most of them were inevitably after sex.

The married father of two, who claims he does not cheat himself, hopes to add one million UK cheaters to his portfolio by Christmas and has a clear conscience over what he calls “the brave new world of illicit online dating.”

As I mentioned in my New York Confidential column, Sex and the City isn’t that far off the mark at all. Pleasure is big business in the Big Apple and everyone’s at it – even the married ones. And I’m not the only Brit who thinks so.

TV presenter Myleene Klass revealed this week that a high-profile Hollywood actor recently propositioned her with an actual sex contract so that they could embark on an affair.

She said. “I met him a few times and when I went to interview him it was like something out of a film. We were having lunch and his PA came over with a confidentiality contract. I just thought, 'Oh my God, your poor wife'. I don’t want to be a marriage-wrecker.”

It’s little wonder then that a businessman in the US is reaping massive financial gain from a dating website that encourages people to have affairs. The owner of the site has this week announced plans for the launch of a multi-million pound UK version this year after reaching seven million members in the US, Canada and Australia alone.

The married father of two, who claims he does not cheat himself, hopes to add one million UK cheaters to his portfolio by Christmas and has a clear conscience over what he calls “the brave new world of illicit online dating.”

Slogans such as ‘an affair to remember or your money back’ and ‘Life is short. Have an affair’ have rustled more than a few faithful feathers. The founder of a different dating site for single people accused it of being a "business built on the back of broken hearts, ruined marriages and damaged families.”

And their response to such criticisms? “Remember, opportunity knocks once, but temptation leans on the doorbell. We didn’t invent infidelity, we're just a platform. No website or 30-second ad is going to convince anyone to cheat. People cheat because their lives aren't working for them."

Ironically, the owner did admit that if he found out that he's own wife was accessing his cheater's site he “would be devastated."

Most would agree that infidelity is a callous and selfish act and anyone but that anyone who wants to cheat will do, with or without encouragement. Websites such as this therefore can’t be blamed for peoples’ infidelities but they can and should be shamed for encouraging and promoting infidelity to people - many of whom don’t actually want to cheat - via the medium of billboards, radio adverts and TV commercials in the US. Let’s just hope that the UK doesn’t follow America’s lead by promoting this seedy business.
