Cocktail maker Conor gets Venezuela trip for stirring things up

Victory for Alma chap

WHILE the average Reds' fan may by in the doldrums right now, you can always count on a dolled-up rum to lead Liverpool to victory in other championships.

Conor Foley of Alma De Cuba, was the Special One yesterday when he was crowned the winner at the regional final of the ‘World Class’ bar tending competition in Liverpool.

Ever wanted the star of a billboard to go up in your home city? No? Then maybe you fancy a trip to Venezuela. Conor gets both for stirring things up in a spiritual way with his Shango Mojito, “Shango” being a Caribbean-based god of thunder and lightning.

Showcasing his exceptional mixology skills at the rum category final, Conor triumphed over competition from four of the north’s finest bartenders who all came up with stunning shaking moves. And the morning after the night before, the casual sipper of their concoctions is undoubtedly displaying similar behaviour.

Conor was picked, along with James Coston of Jakes Bar & Grill in Leeds, to battle it out for the grand prize. After a highly competitive and tense round, Conor was declared the winner with his innovative cocktail, Conor now wins a place in the prestigious UK final. If he wins that, next stop the world.

Bar people in places like Alma de Cuba take this sort of contest very seriously, and Conor said of his win “World Class is amazing for bartenders as it increases the standards of excellence in hospitality. It also gives us a platform for creativity and improvisation.”

Diageo Reserve (including brands such as Tanqueray® No. Ten™, Johnnie Walker® Blue Label® blended Scotch whisky, Ketel One® and Cîroc® vodka) has launched its ‘World Class’ bartender programme to recognise the incredible skill sets of bartenders across Britain. Yesterday’s rum final was the regional heat to find the finest bartenders in the North. With three categories, the other two are gin, and vodka (what, no tequila?), the regional finals add a whole new understanding to the term “hicsville”.

As for the Reds, people say they're not playing their Bacardis right.
