In real terms: The Haymarket models itself on a New York steak house and grill and does pretty well to this end in menu terms. So no poncy and over-rated fillet steaks on here. Instead sumptuous, tasty rib-eyes (10oz or 14oz), a “New York cut sirloin” and the these-days-rarely-seen T-Bone. At £17.95 and £19.95 respectively, with a 16oz T-Bone weighing in at £20.95, the buy-one-get-one-free deal is Bull Market in every sense.
The Haymarket boasts that its steaks are from grass fed traceable Hereford prime cattle, whose meat is known for its fine marbling to give it extra texture and flavour. But if beef's not for you there's an appetising range of other meat, fish and vegetable dishes including whole free range poussin, grilled fillet of turbot, which our operatives deemed delicious when they invited themselves in, and roast loin of suckling pig. The Haymarket Mixed Grill at £22.95 is the daddy of them all - but remember that BOGOF and loosen those buckles.
Accrued benefits: A roast breast of quail starter was delish, as was blue swimmer crab, lobster & king prawn cocktail and there's plenty of room for puds too. A very imaginative hand made and local cheese selection (three cheeses for £8) and a bitter chocolate and Seville orange mousse (£6.75), left no room for more, and we cannily counted the cash saving to punters as the pianist uncannily played Pennies From Heaven.
The Interest Rate: High. The Haymarket was banging when we arrived on a Wednesday night, with one table of eight happy customers even telling us they were on the Liverpool Confidential offer. That could have been YOU!
