Something for the weekend.....

From now until Sunday, Southport is turning itself into a magnet for grub lovers with its first ever food and drink festival.

And it's high time too. Southport is not exactly lacking when it comes to the hospitality trade and dozens of its restaurants, bars, pubs, retail outlets and hotels have signed up to the festival which will include taster menus, special offers, locally sourced foods, wine tastings, themed nights, cooking demonstrations, cocktail competitions, talks, special offers and many more free, exciting activities in the town centre.

Chef demonstrations will take place in a specially constructed festival marquee in front of the Arts Centre. There will also be a farmers market, so no excuse for buying supermarket sausages this weekend, plus a bigger and better international and continental market along Lord Street and Chapel Street where you can fruitlessly try to haggle down the price of a string of French garlic.

Glasses will be chucked up in the air during a cocktail competition taking place throughout the festival, hosted by Core and Maloney’s, in a bid to find the Bartender of the Year. The final is on Sunday at festival marquee.

Barons Bar, at the Scarisbrick Hotel, will celebrate their 25th Ale Festival and will host a range of 50 ales to taste and sample cheeses. Local beer producers, Southport Brewery, Moorhouse Brewery and George Wrights Brewery have come up with three festival ales which will be available throughout the three days.

A host of other events happening around the town includes a kids healthy eating morning at Chiquito’s, an organic wine tasting, gourmet hight and Sunday BBQ at Fifty One The Promenade. Special festival sausages are available from Broughs the Butchers, and more. Fill your boots.
