New 'scores on doors' scheme hailed a success

But here are the 'ones' told to do better

New 'scores on doors' scheme hailed a success

A NEW system for rating hygiene in Liverpool’s food businesses has been hailed a success after its first year of operation.

The city council adopted the food hygiene rating scheme, a national rating system operated by the Food Standard Agency and local authorities, in January 2013.

And in its first year it has seen an increase in the number of food outlets achieving the highest hygiene rating, says the council.

Businesses are rated from 0 to 5 with five being the highest standard. In January 2013  there were 1330 businesses with a five-star rating – a year later this had increased to 1455; 668 had a 4 –star rating in 2013 and this rose to 729 in 2014.

At the other end of the scale 21 premises were given a zero rating in 2013 but this has declined to eight a year later.

None of these are restaurants, as such, but include takeaways in affluent south Liverpool suburbs such as the Khan Tandoori in Brodie Avenue and Pizza Corner in Greenhill Road.

However there are still 55 restaurants and cafes in Liverpool with a score of one, which is far from great and according to hygiene inspectors "need major improvement."

There are one or two surprise names in there, full list below.

Councillor Tim Moore, city council cabinet member, said: “There is no doubt that this system has had a beneficial impact on restaurants, cafes, pubs and other food outlets.

“Customers, quite rightly demand the highest levels of hygiene and they vote with their feet when this is not demonstrated.

“Of course, there are a handful of premises where the hygiene standards leave a lot to be desired and not only will we take action against them but we are quite prepared to name and shame them. It is only right however, that we should recognise the majority of businesses which have very good standards of cleanliness and food preparations and which are a credit to the city.”

Food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers who base their ratings on

  • How hygienically food is handled –its preparations, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage

  • The condition of premises– their cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities

  • How the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe.

If the top rating is not given, the business will be advised what improvements need to be made and what action they can take to improve their rating.

Businesses are encouraged to display certificates and stickers showing their rating so that customers can see them.

The number one chart: eating places in Liverpool that should do better

Liverpool has 55 'restaurants, cafes and canteens' with a score of one in the Food Standard Agency's ratings. This means in need of major improvement. However there are many more premises, including food shops and takeaways, not included in this list, whicg scored one or less. They can be found here The dates premises were last inspected are given in each case.

Oh dear! Still, I must say we've never had a problem with the Sahara, which we like a good deal.

No excuse for poor hygiene

My daughter and I went in to Auberge on Allerton Road on a Sunday lunch time recently the place was empty. The food was appalling I ordered cheese on toast what I got was a lump of bread with microwaved cheese on it and cold coffee. I won't even describe my daughters lunch the staff were miserable I would never go there again. The place looks pleasant enough but having a low hygiene rating is no surprise. I got the distinct impression who owns it obviously does not give a monkeys.

Did you pay?

I have to say I did my daughter would have been mortified if I would have refused. I just wanted to get out of the place and never to return. My logic to this is everywhere else was busy they were not. Therefore if other people don't return they end up with no customers and close.

So you took the easy, chicken hearted way out then scuttled over here to throw some cheap shots from the safety of your keyboard? You're as committed to raising standards as they are!
