LIVERPOOL city centre is getting a new farmers-style food and drink market - and the first one takes place this weekend.
Despite setting down their stalls successfully at farmers markers in Lark Lane and Woolton, the nomadic herds of ostrich burger butchers and artisan cheese-makers have never really found an optimum place to settle in the heart of Liverpool – not since being kicked off Victoria Street car park 10 years ago.
Farmers MarketBut this new market takes place just a spit away, on Stanley Street and this time the businesses on Stanley Street are behind it.
It takes place on Easter Saturday (April 7) between 9am and 3pm and promises some of Liverpool’s finest food companies offering their wares alongside street entertainment and pavement cafés.
The new market will feature stalls with farmers’ produce, local cheese artisan breads, coffee roasters, the Chocolate Cellar and one of Sir Richard Branson’s favourite Liverpool entrepreneurs: Aaron Booth’s cheesecake booth.
“This new venture widens the range of markets available in Liverpool, “said Paul Amann, Stanley Street Quarter Steering Group chairman. “It will concentrate on high quality food and drink and really extend choice for shoppers.
“It is one of the many ways we are making the Stanley Street Quarter a real hub of activity and diversity. I am sure we will be attracting many shoppers on Saturday - and they will want to come back and bring their friends.”
The market will be held on the first Saturday of every month until October, except for August when Liverpool Pride takes place.

Great news. Sunday in Hope Street was never my thing.
Don't forget, a chicken bought from a farmers market will still last you twice as long as a full fat one from the supermarket.
You are right. We had one that lasted for 8 years until I backed the car over it.
And a dog in the fridge is worth 6 months in jail
Good news that we are getting more of these events. Manchester seems to have these kind of markets and the European markets regularly around Albert Sq and Piccadilly. They are always packed with people. But as well as Stanley St and Hope St events, we could do with establishing a regular space for Marquees and stalls similar to the way Manchester does it, maybe around William Brown St and St Georges Hall and the gardensas somewhere to sit and get your Bratwurst out for a nibble. It would provide good advertising backdrop and people could step off at Lime St and just cross the road.
If they knocked Lime Street down and built a nice square. I mean let's face it, what is Lime Street good for?
Selling fresh limes
Lime Street's current role seems to be create a massive traffic bottleneck whilst accommodating takeaways, vomit and grease stains.
In the good old days it was four lanes of free-flowing traffic with upmarket shops and three cinemas. Even the government surplus floors of Coates' Army & Navy Stores full of musty haversacks were upmarket compared to the rubbish that's there now.
Knock it down, no one would miss it.
Is the guy who does the chat grilled foot long bratwurst's not going to be there? He does lark lane and Allerton road, really high end food stall, more like a pop up deli than a food stall really. He has up to 8 homemade chilli sauces for you to try with your sausage, even real sauerkraut!
Hog roasts are becoming a bit of a cliche no?
Chat should obv read 'char'
I find that Lidl sell an excellent free range chicken for a fraction of the cost of a farmers market. Iceland ditto for free range eggs
