Another fine mezze at Christakis

Belly dancing and a big fat Greek banquet spells a smashing night out

Another fine mezze at Christakis

ON school nights at Christakis, they don't normally do belly dancing, wholesale crockery destruction and setting things on fire, complete with a disco until 2am.

Would the big fat Greek fun translate into a true feast? Or would we be left with only a hard little sausage and ouzo regrets?

It's probably for the best. Nobody would ever get up the next day to run the city, tend to its businesses or run its vital services after an evening smashing plates.

Apart from December, when the nightly appetite for these things is insatiable, Christakis saves such spectacular treats for Fridays and Saturdays – and anything goes at the famous Greek-Cypriot taverna on York Street.

Last weekend, the Liverpool Confidential team were treated to the whole works at this mini-Med party central. It had to be done. We had left it too long

Now we consider ourselves men and women of the world. “Seasoned bon viveur” is in the job description, and, at Christakis on party night, we got a run for our money. We were in impressive company: two hundred and eighty people all out for revelling, stoked up on some fine Greek and Cypriot food.

The charismatic Christakis is no stranger to radio listeners and no stranger to his own family-run restaurant which is long established in the city. In the 1970s and 1980s, father-in-law Renos ran this, one of the three most popular tavernas in Liverpool, and now Christakis, with his wife, Francesca, and sons Haris, Renos and Andreas, continue the good times. Christakis himself hosts these events, urges the party on through the PA and shakes the hands of friends and patrons old and new.

But would the dishes being served live up to the same hype? Would the big fat Greek fun become a true feast? Or would we be left with only a hard little sausage and ouzo regrets?

Well, yes to the first two and the jury is out on the ouzo question. Dine from the meat banquet at £16.95 per head and you will not go hungry, that's for sure.

Over 20 dishes are presented including chargrilled lamb chops, pork, chicken and lamb kebabs with home-made sausages, sheftalia, halloumi, loumza, chargrilled peppers, onions and mushrooms. Not forgetting garlic prawns, calamari and, of course, the freshest pitta and Greek breads, warmed for dipping in generous bowls of hummous and taramasalata and tzatziki. Olives, an excellent Greek salad, keftedes (meatballs) and dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) will all conspire to leave you, well, stuffed.

There are an army of friendly waiters and waitresses to cope with the demands of all these diners, and, from the moment we arrived, our table enjoyed the undivided attentions of the lovely Maria who raised only the merest of eyebrows as the very pleasant Aphrodite retsina (£12.95) flowed. And flowed.

But forgetting the weekend excitement for a second, Christakis, according to our past reviews, is a friendly, warm and great value-for-money taverna any night of the week. It might be mere hop from the buzz of Liverpool One but it's a scorching world away.

Several days on from the party night at Christakis, we still have the tune Zorba the Greek sprinting, in big clogs, around our fragile heads.

Big fans of Cristakis at the weekend. Been to two hen nights there. It's cheap and cheerful. By the time the lights go down and they set fire to the dance floor, who cares what the food is like any more! :)
