Carriage Works best in North of England

WE said it was good but we didn't know it was that good. Now the London Carriage Works is the best restaurant in the North of England.

Paul Askew and chuffed pals even beat off the Michelin-starred Holbeck Ghyll in Windermere to take the Northern Hospitality Awards accolade back to Liverpool - the first time a restaurant here has managed it - at a ceremony in Manchester's Lowry Hotel. Sweet.

Now in their third year, the awards in which Paul was last year named best chef-mentor, set out to recognise the finest in the hospitality industry across the north of England.

The restaurant category is judged on high culinary and service standards with commercial success. And the winner has to “set standards which are inspiring to the restaurant industry”. Hundreds of entries were assessed by a panel of independent industry judges with The Carriage Works the only restaurant from Liverpool to make it to the finals.

The Hope Street Hotel-based restaurant, which threw out its £55 set course “fine dining” menu last year, beat off competition from Brasserie Black Door, Newcastle, El Gato Negro, West Yorks, Holbeck Ghyll, Cumbria, and The Peacock at Rowsley, Derbyshire.

And while awards like these can only be seen as good for the city's restaurant trade, in the raising-the-bar sense, the chef patron merely remarked: “All of us here at The London Carriage Works are delighted to have won this award.”

We'll bet. Get the chipper on Paul.

Well, congrats and all that - but I can't understand why.Went to LCW this evening, for the first time after the dumbing-down (sorry, rebranding....)It is still good. But it isn't special any more. For what you now get for your money, you may as well opt for any number of the other good restaurants in the city. Having recently experienced Malmaison, for the same money, just about everything is better there.Thats not to say LCW is bad. But its now just another restaurant with all the little extras and flourishes which used to make it that somewhere a little special swept sway. And the longstanding weak spots (ie waiting staff from Liverpool Hope Uni doing a couple of nights a week) haven't improved. Take tonight. We had to remind the waitress (one of six who served us) to tell us about the specials. We had to remind another waiter that we had ordered sides. They came courtesy of another staff member a few seconds later ut he clearly wasn't awareYes, its cheaper now - but a shame, I think, that we now don't have any really fist-class restaurants in the city. This one needs to be filed under 'good but serviceable' (and for what it is doing now - overpriced.)
