Ah the cheese toastie. One of the finest staples of student life and often the only thing many people can make. Who hasn't rolled in from the pub and emptied the entire contents of the fridge into two thickly buttered slices of orange Warburtons, turned the toaster on its side and shoved the lot into one of the slots? It's the ultimate midnight feast, but for those who wish to employ a less high risk strategy and need their comfort food by day, there are plenty of caffs, good and bad, doing them, should you get caught short. Here are some we found earlier |
Where? The Hole in the Wall, School Lane, L1
How much? £2.50.
The toast: Fairly average white bread, the sort that sticks to the roof of your mouth.
The filling: Loads of extra-melting, white cheddar, with a big pile of fried, browned, sticky onions piled on top.
The rest: A pile of pretty basic but very fresh salad. Cheap and cheerful, it might not be what the doctor orders but it's damn fine comfort food. Available to take away but beware, it needs to be eaten pretty promptly.
The verdict: A melting moment.
Where? The Egg cafe, Newington Buildings, Newington, L1
How much? £3.70
The toast: Great slabs of white bread to sink your teeth into.
The filling: Well, not as such. This isn't a cheese toastie in the sandwich sense, as our picture shows. But it takes all sorts. This is bog-standard mild, white cheddar. What it lacks in flavour it makes up for in quantity, counter-balancing the thickness of the bread.
The rest: Olives, pasta, kidney beans, chick peas, lettuce, haricot beans. Lift up the big slabs of bread and you're likely to discover more salad and cous cous, in the same way you'd find a family of woodlice under a mossy log.
The verdict: Cheeses, this is good.
Where? The Courtyard, Little Crosby. L23
How much? £5.45.
The toast: Malted brown bread.
The filling: Good quality, mature cheddar. Also with red onion or tomato.
The rest: A super salad of leaves, little whole cherry tomatoes, onion and shards of red pepper put together with loving care and a good balsamic dressing.
As if that wasn't enough, there is also a dollop of creamy, home-made coleslaw and a pile of tortilla chips.
The verdict: A king among toasties.
9.5/10

You all do realise you are having a virtual conversation about cheese on toast? What next? looking at CAD toasties? Putting a webcam in the kitchen of The Courtyard to admire how the chef puts the cheese on toast under the grill?
Well done The Courtyard. And well done Liverpool Confidential for putting this little gem on the larger map. Visitors to the Gormley men could do no better than to make their way to Little Crosby and The Courtyard.
Computer Aided Design. I get Balfour Beattie to design my toasties.
Keep Schtum about The Courtyard in Crosby. It's a secret. Me, the wife and dog are frequent visitors.
What's a CAD toastie? Is that something a man who ill-treats people of the opposite sex would eat?
You should try Kanes on Stafford Street. Magnificent little cafe serves up fantastic cheese toasties.
£5.45 for a cheese toastie! - it should be good - regardless of good quality balsamic dressing. Credit crunch aint hit ya yet then?
