Our testers have been out and about around city cafes and butty bars to find out which of this random trio best cuts the mustard.

Best of Three: Hot roast beef sandwich

WHY have hamburgers when you can have a hot roast beef sandwich? Just as bad for you, just as gorgeous, and as a once-in-a-while lunchtime treat they are becoming ever more popular on takeaway menus. Hold the fries and open wide...

Steak and Cheese Sub (£3.10)
Subway, Bold Street, Liverpool. L1.

The bread: A Subway roll basically. On this occasion the six-inch version (£3.10), although many may wish to accommodate a 12-incher (£4.90)

The meat: Chopped up thinly and cooked to well done already, it came from a Tupperware dish out of the fridge in the back and was heated in the microwave in front of us. Any flavour that once might have existed, long beaten out of it.

The rest: Grated cheese, microwaved, to top. A good choice of salad accompaniments. This one had raw red onions and green peppers in fair supply but we could have kept going. Choice of sauces too. Ranch on this one was not the best move. The whole thing actually tasted a lot better than it sounds and you might like it

Overall: 5/10. Steak it or leave it.

The Deli Baguettes
Delice de France, van, Church Alley, Liverpool 1. (£2.50)

The bread: A 10-inch part cooked Delice baguette, finished off in the oven while you wait, so warm and crisp.

Meat: Thin, tender, tasty, if a few seconds past its optimum, but definitely benefited from being cooked on the spot.

The rest: Onions were nice if a little stingily applied, salt and pepper and the sauce of your choice. French van but service as Liverpolitan as it comes and the product good value for money.

Overall: 7/10. Delice-ful.


Rare Roast Beef and English Mustard (£3.95)Philpotts, Exchange Flags, L2. Tel: 0151 227 9099

Bread: You get a choice here but this one came in a baguette which was a nice texture, not too chewy, good flavour without distracting from the contents

The meat: A generous helping of hand-carved, rare roast beef, excellent flavour and from joints of meat roasted on the premises that day

The rest: Lashings of lovely fresh salad, red onion included and hot English mustard. This is one of a series of daily specials from the hot counter and may not always be available, but there are usually varieties on the same theme and well worth seeking out.

Overall: 8.5/10 A rare treat.
