The One to watch: One-act plays..

The Write Now festival of new play writing begins its first run this weekend and continues for a week. But what's it all about?

The One to watch: One-act plays..

One act plays? Does that mean you get to the pub quicker?
You are that philistine, aren't you? A one act play is distinct from plays that occur over several acts. One-act plays may consist of one or more scenes. The origin of the one-act play may be traced to the very beginning of drama: in ancient Greece, Cyclops, a satyr play by Euripides, is an early example.

You are that cheat aren't you? I can tell you've ust cut and pasted that of Wikipedia.
Might have. Alright I did. But did you know “In recent years the 10-minute play known as "flash drama" has emerged as a popular sub-genre of the one-act play, especially in writing competitions”?

“Flash drama”. Is that an Echo headline on a cottaging story?
No, this is exposure of a different kind. Write Now, Liverpool’s inaugural One Act Play Festival opens this Friday 26 March til Saturday 03 April 2010 at The Actors’ Studio, Seel Street, Liverpool 1.

Mmm, not sure this is in the remit of my comfort zone. I only do chirpy scouse comedy.
Take a punt on something new. “There are fewer and fewer opportunities to take risks and discover fresh talent not only on Merseyside but across the UK,” says Festival Director Ian Moore. “

Go on then, do the spiel.
Ten brand new pieces of theatre; eight shows receiving four performances each supplemented by two shows receiving rehearsed readings, all offering a fantastic platform for new writing and a an excellent representation of the talent that’s out there.

You've just read that off the press handout haven't you?
Might have. Alright I did. But on with the list of what's in store.

*The Dressmaker’s Gift by Anita Franklin tells the story of three generations of black American women in late 70’s New York.

*Nick Brelsford’s I’m Ed Caesar investigates the life of a well-known celebrity torn between love and an overbearing agent.

*The Person Without by Jenny Yates, originally from Bolton but recently relocated to Windermere, is an homage to the style of Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train with a Harold Pinter twist.

<*manchester>Second’s Out follows boxer Danny, a certain medal contender, and his realisation that boxing is not for him.

*Two lads lose their ‘moral compass’ in Rob Johnston’s black comedy Under My Skin, a piece which explores the fact that “a crime is only a crime if you get caught”

*Paul Williams’ Pippin Hal, a coming-of-age tale about a Guardian Angel trying to earn his wings.

*Heart, James Stewart's dark comedic journey of discovery.

*Dave Young’s The Guy’s A Monster, the farce of the festival about two Scousers trying to emulate Dr Victor Frankenstein’s re-animation experiments, but with a Guy Fawkes dummy!

Do say: This one will run and run.

Don't say: Well try some Imodium then.
