The Magnet To Re-open This Weekend

Hardman Street club is back in business

The Magnet To Re-open This Weekend

LIVERPOOL’S own anti-club, The Magnet on Hardman Street, is set to re-open this weekend.  The official launch party sees legendary DJ Norman Jay MBE return to headline the club he played at during its heyday.

The Magnet holds an illustrious place in Liverpool’s musical history – Freddie’s first gig with Queen took place in the venue when it was The Sink – but the last few years saw it losing its way before closing a year ago.

“The time could not be more right; recessions always incubate creatives. The venue itself is 50 years old and has a great history of music.”

Tokyo Industries, owners of Factory Manchester and Fibbers in York, and Richard McGinnis and Lewis Boardman of Chibuku, The Warehouse Project and the Shipping Forecast, have restored The Magnet to its former glory.

It'll be alright on the nightIt'll be alright on the nightBoasting a refurbishment which takes the venue back to its underground roots and a state of the art Funktion One sounds system, The Magnet is set to rock once again with a wide playlist covering everything from funk to soul to alternative indie to electronica.

Aaron Mellor, managing director of Tokyo Industries, says it was a chance meeting that set The Magnet back on the road to getting its heart and soul back.

“As a student in Liverpool during the early 90s The Magnet was a personal favourite. At the peak of the superclubs, this place was about as far away from that as you could get – small, underground and boutique.

“Sadly it lost its way a few years ago and stood empty. The plan to bring it back to life came together after a chance meeting in Liverpool with Richard and Lewis, then with Johnny Mellor, one of the originators of the club in the 1990s.

“Finally, following a random meeting with Howard Ashley Storey, the original curator of The Magnet, it all felt almost too good to be true. It had to happen. Within weeks we'd signed on the lease and got some of the original team members all back on board - a few years wiser but all with the settled objective to replace the heart & soul back into the venue.

“The time could not be more right; recessions always incubate creatives. We’re all very bored of the sanitised chrome plated 'style' bar culture of late. The Magnet lives and breathes music.  The venue itself is 50 years old and has a great history of music.”
