Tom Jones to rock Haydock

Hip swinging man of pop headlines races. Scissor Sisters and Rick Astley too

Tom Jones to rock Haydock

HIP swingster of yore Sir Tom Jones is to headline Haydock Park Racecourse's top music night of 2011.

The hairy chested one, who has sold more than 100 million records and probably had just as many pairs of knickers chucked at him, will perform “a dynamic show” that includes classic hits, special selections and songs from his latest work, prayerbook album Praise & Blame after horse racing on Saturday June 18.

The green, green grass of the course will see some galloping of hooves in the evening before the night, before artificial hips swing to the Welshman's catalogue of hits.

It does leave Merseyside's music fans with a dilemma – will it be Ringo, who plays at the Empire on the same day, or Tom?

If you're not a fan of ducking foundation garments as they are hurled on stage then it's likely the former Beatle is for you. If you still hold a grudge after a certain chat show interview, Jones and Haydock makes sense.

Newton-le-Willows' own pop legend, Rick Astley, who is more predominantly known to under-25s as the man who ruined Youtube – kicks off Haydock's music nights on April 16, and the annoyingly catchy Scissor Sisters round the nights off on July 16.

Tickets can be purchased at www.haydock-park.co.uk, via the ticket hotline 0844 579 3006 or at the racecourse in person.

Gates will open at the racecourse at 4.35pm on 18 June. The first race is currently scheduled for 6.35pm, and Sir Tom Jones comes on stage after the final race at 9.05pm.

Dickon White, Haydock Park's managing director, said: "Haydock Park's summer series of music nights after horse racing has got better year after year - and the crowds return in big numbers. Last year's appearances by JLS and Simply Red were sensational and hugely popular. We're thrilled that Sir Tom Jones will be with us."
