WIRRAL got its own radio station this week - and promptly signed up Ian McNabb to take it into its first weekend.

And producers are so impressed with The Icicle Works founder that they say he could be the new Parkie.

McNabb says he has been told he can do whatever he likes when he presents the late Friday night show on 92.1 FM Wirral Radio, live, every week from 10pm-midnight.

The show promises "premium rock 'n' roll, super opinionated banter, superb guests and live music".

"I am a lover of radio and always listen to a few hours of it every week in the hope that I will hear something I've never heard before and learn something new," says the 53-year-old who supports Neil Young and Crazy Horse at the Arena next month.

"Being given this opportunity to have my own show on Wirral Radio is a real thrill for me, especially as I have no brief from anyone about what type of music I can play.

"I have a free hand and it will basically be a night round at mine for a party. I can't wait! I will also feature a guest every week and we will have acoustic music live. I will play some of my own stuff too of course."

The new digital station is based in Leasowe, which includes three broadcast studios, a large live room, recording studio and a fully equipped IT training suite complete with two training studios.

Producing the Ian McNabb show is Graham Robertson from Bebington, who has worked for BBC Radio London for over 12 years.

He says; "Ian’s a natural, funny, great raconteur who knows his
music inside out and it turns out, a pretty good interviewer too. I
think we can make something interesting here and if he plays his cards
right he could be the next Parkinson".

The presenter line-up includes John Storey, Neil Newton, Johnny Kennedy, Laura Penn and Tony James.

David Prior, chairman of Wirral Radio, said: “The emphasis of the new station is local news with a sound quite different from anything else currently found on the dial."
