Are Mancs the best neighbours?

Gumtree survey finds we’re the best next door folk in the country. Agree?

Published on June 10th 2010.

Are Mancs the best neighbours?

This is an interesting story from Gumtree.com. Apparently we’re very neighbourly in this city. In fact we’re the most neighbourly.

A report examining the issues across the UK found this.

‘In terms of neighbourly deeds, Mancunians scored the highest in all categories of the survey: borrowing something from a neighbour (44%), asking for help in an emergency (43%), leaving a set of keys with their neighbour (49%), asking someone to keep an eye on their house (67%), signing for a package (72%), dining with their neighbours (40%), popping round for coffee (44%), introducing themselves when moving in (35%) and sending a Christmas card (82%).’

Bless us all.

Somebody did wonder out loud though whether the Manchester results had come exclusively from the northern end of the city region. “People in the north of the city are more friendly, definitely,” said Svetlana Cavern. “South Mancs are much more standoffish.”

This perception may be true as the south of the city has a more transient population with a higher turnover of neighbours. Long term neighbours, you’d expect, would be more settled and comfortable with each other than those in bedsit and apartment country.

Two typical Mancunian neighbours who eventually moved apart

By the way, in terms of the least neighbourly area, London wins out – quelle surprise. London scores well below the national average in all categories. However Edinburgh is also guilty of being neighbour-shy and people there are the least likely to turn to neighbours in an emergency.

Back to Manchester. Whether you’re from north or south the question we’d like to ask you is whether the Gumtree.com results reflect your experience as citizens of the city?

Are you a good neighbour? Do you have good neighbours? Or is this a load of tosh in your opinion.

At Confidential of course, we’re charming people and will always offer readers, sundry passers-by, even traffic wardens a brew, a biscuit and some absurd chat. Gordo might even get his special foie gras out.

Load of old Tosh !

My home was burgled 5 times living here.

I had to move out of Manchester on account of my neighbours, one a Jap and the other an Italian fella.I know I shouldn't mention names due to libel and all that but I am convinced both Nikamota and Robertelli were in on it !

My direct neighbour is fantastic and most of my other neighbours are spot on. Maybe I'm lucky but our building has a very good and friendly atmosphere.

After living in various parts of Didsbury for several years followed by a spell in Castlefield, I can honestly say my current neighbourhood in Rusholme is by far the friendliest. I repeat; By Far.
