Winter festivities that continue long after Christmas Day

The city still has plenty to offer in early January

Winter festivities that continue long after Christmas Day

Once 25 December passes and we resign ourselves to creating unachievable New Year’s resolutions, you wouldn’t be alone for assuming that the festivities all end. Yet the city centre still has plenty of winter cheer on offer.

Recorders is Manchester Art Gallery’s latest free exhibition and showcases the work of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. As one of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists, he has created artwork where visitors can see, hear and feel the actions of people around them using modern technology.

Over in Spinningfields, the ice rink is open every day after Christmas until 3 January. It’s a great place to have fun with the family or can even be used to kick-start a new exercise regime for the coming year. An adult ticket is £8.50 and if you’re planning on going with various relatives who drop in over the holidays then be sure to buy a £24 family ticket to save you money.

Whilst you’re there, why not pay a visit to The Lodge? It is luxury shopping street The Avenue’s winter pop-up bar and provides a luxurious haven for skaters and sales-shoppers alike. With a range of hot beers, mulled wine and an impressive 17 flavours of Hot Chocolate there’s sure to be a tipple to quench your thirst. There’s also a food menu with a great mix of traditional winter warmers and an a la carte menu from the Mark Addy if you’re looking for something more substantial. The Lodge is also open until 3 January from 12pm-11pm daily.

If you’re looking to confront the Spirits of Christmas then the Library Theatre Company's Scrooge is being performed daily at The Lowry Theatre. Tickets range from £8 to £16.50 with savings available if you purchase a family ticket. Go and see this magical show before it ends on 8 January.

Sometimes we all overdose on Christmas specials and spin-offs recommended to us in the Radio Times. Whilst this is almost a tradition in its own right, an injection of culture in January is sure to stop those recurring nightmares about the inevitable tragedy in EastEnders and reruns of Only Fools and Horses. Recorders is Manchester Art Gallery’s latest free exhibition and showcases the work of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. As one of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists, he has created artwork where visitors can see, hear and feel the actions of people around them using modern technology.

If the arts, crafts and Art Nouveau movements are more to your taste then a new exhibition displaying over 100 pots and tiles created by Pilkington’s world famous Lancastrian pottery company is also running at the Manchester Art Gallery. An ideal antidote to the stresses of Christmas, this free exhibition allows visitors to discover the beautiful art pieces from the firm’s golden era and see a number of unique works made for international exhibitions.

So whether you have a perfect Christmas or a less-than-enjoyable holiday season, the city still has plenty to offer after 25 December.
