Weekend pick: UK's first Zumba party

Be a real mover and a shaker and lose tons of weight

Weekend pick: UK's first Zumba party

THIS sounds like our sort of exercise class. It involves a bar - and not the sort they have in ballet.

But while we are at it, if you are in danger of turning into the Sugar Plum Fairy this is for you.

Zumba is a South American dance fitness craze that originated by accident in Columbia when aerobics teacher Beto Perez forgot his usual tapes and had to dip into his own iPod of Latin music.

Now it is taking the world by storm. It's high energy - you can lose 1,000 calories an hour by taking part - and your chance will come this this weekend when the city hosts the UK’s first formalised Zumba Fitness Party Night.

Zumba combines hypnotic latin rhythms with easy to follow moves. What makes this workout slightly different is that afterwards, rather than shuffle off into the night, you sashay into a party, complete with cocktails and dancing. We should think so too.

This event takes place at Lifestyles Tennis Centre, Wavertree, where organisers hope up to 800 people will move and shake the night away, led by local instructors and joined by American Zumba expert Lindsey Schwahn. The two-hour workout will follow into a party with a full bar and food. Big sound systems, creative lighting and projections promise to create a high energy atmosphere.

Said Lisa Richards, of CJC Live, who is organising the event: “This is a first for the UK as we take Zumba to the next level, into a nightclub arena and it’s promising to be a fantastic night.”

OK, the Wavertree Tennis Centre isn't exactly a nightclub arena, but sshhh, let's not spoil it.

*Zumba Party, Saturday Nov 13, 6.00pm-11.30pm, Lifestyles Tennis Centre, Wellington Road, Wavertree, Liverpool L15 4LE. 0151 293 8350. Tickets, £15, include a voucher for a soft drink and food and are available from Lifestyles Centres around the city and are for over 18s only.
