Weekend pick: Remember, remember

Images of soldiers killed in Middle East projected onto St George's hall

Weekend pick: Remember, remember

TWENTY soldiers from Merseyside killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan are to be remembered in a special way on Sunday.

Their images are to be projected on a giant video wall during the two minutes silence at Liverpool's Remembrance Service at St George's Plateau on Lime Street.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and the 65th anniversary of VE and VJ Day.

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Hazel Williams, said: "The city's Remembrance Service is always a special and moving occasion. This year will be especially poignant as we also remember local men and women who have been killed during recent wars and conflicts.

"I urge everyone to wear their poppy with pride and show their support in remembrance of those who have sacrificed their lives for us in battle."

This year the city will also be paying tribute to the volunteers of the Inner Wheel Club of Liverpool who have organised the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in the business quarter since 1983.

Councillor Williams said: "After 27 years of selfless service helping raise tens of thousands of pounds for the Poppy Appeal, they have all reached an age were they are now reluctantly having to pass on the organisation of this vital fundraising to others. “After the service at the Cenotaph, it will be my honour to present them with a certificate in recognition of their hard work and dedication."

Danielle Thomas, accompanied by the band of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, will sing and play at the Cenotaph prior to the service.

And three young people from Liverpool Schools' Parliament - Sammy Jo Fitzpatrick, Kyle Lally and Richard Cantelon - will also be laying a wreath.
