Spring for the weekend

Heather Smith's getting into wildflowers, Jimi Hendrix, unclean comedy and the Dykeenies

Published on March 20th 2009.

Spring for the weekend

Pollen count

Why not get outdoors and celebrate the spring equinox this Saturday in a natural hotspot, just off the M62. The National Wildflower Centre, on the Childwall/Knowsley border is hosting an afternoon of activity to inspire wild green fingery, and get kids ready for Mothers Day.

For just £4 they will come away with a decorated, planted pot of their own doing and get a Mothers Day card boxed off, too. Brilliant. And if it's for you, Just act surprised.

The hands on event is part of the National Lottery funded Great Outdoors project which is designed to encourage us to lead happier and healthier lives.

Don't forget your hay fever tablets.

First impressionists

Having been in the game for 20 years, with well over 4,000 gigs under their belts, the Hamsters are far from your bogstandard tribute band.

"Nobody plays the music of Jimi Hendrix better", says The Times.

The guitar, bass and drums trio storm into Southports Art Centre this Saturday for a two-set special in praise of Jimi and ZZ Top. And they credit themselves with being Britain's best interpreters of the Ozzie band too.

Does Sharp Dressed Men segue effortlessly into All Along the Watchtower? And, if so, are the Hamsters in big demand at both Mormon and Jehovah Witness parties?

Go and find out, and come back and tell us.

*The Hamsters @ Southport Arts Centre, Sat 21st March, 8pm, tickets £12-£10, call 01704 540011

Look at the smut in here

Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood haven't exactly received rave reviews for their first Royal Court frolic. Sacked cleaners played by Pauline Daniels, Eithne Browne and Clare Bowles decide to set up their own sex chat line.

Expect smut, double entendres and innuendos galore from the fishnet-wearing, feather-dusting ladies. Sometimes this effortless-to-watch silliness is all that will do on a Friday night.

The Guardian's Alfred Hickling was far from impressed with the 2008 Scouseology Award-winning “crass comedy.”

But if three ageing cleaners cackling over port and lemon flavoured condoms floats your boat, go for it.

What's in a name?

The Dykeenies, an all-male Glaswegian four piece, roll into the Liverpool O2 Academy this Saturday with Alto Elite and Pearl And The Puppets, ahead of the Sounds of the City single release, which is due out on April 27th.

The band are the result of a bet that suggested the boys couldn't release an album, under a name including the word 'Dyke.' Hilarious. Along with the bet stake of 26 pence, the band have managed to win critical acclaim across the board.

The indie quartet have also become festival favourites. But are they enjoyed by people of every sexual persuasion? Or even discerning musical taste? Who knows?

*The Dykeenies @ O2 Academy, Sat 21st March, £7, doors 7pm
