Sound moves

The Rascals, Kate Nash, Wombats and a bare breasted lady. It could only be the launch of Liverpool Sound City. Heather Smith went to the party

Sound moves

FRESH bands, top tunes, free sweets and erm, nakedness. This was the launch party for Liverpool Sound City, a four day international music festival that gets under way on May 27th 2008.

Yes, it's time to dig out your dancing shoes, guys, as the festival itself expects to bring us a mix of parties and gigs staging global and local acts across an array of Liverpool venues big and small. Barfly was in the limelight for the launch and the aim of the game was to introduce a wide range of surfacing talent and generally tease us with with what is to come in May.

“Oh no! Wardrobe malfunction!” we cried as Lilly Lotus of Ezra Bang & Hot Machine stood on the stage exposed. But no error had taken place. She was bare chested for the entirity of their set. Utterly confused, “What's going on, have you ever seen these before?” we asked. “Oh yeah, they were like this at Liverpool Music Week,” answered one all-knowing onlooker. Nice.

The audience warmed to them extremely well, in the circumstances, and their choppy disco anthems are actually quite catchy, there was no resistance, for example, to a chant-a-long during the song that I later found out was titled “Erotic Adventures Of John The Butcher.” Quite the underground hit, apparently.

Rising stars The Rascals were top of the bill and best of the bunch. They played Ratcatcher and Is It Too Late?, as well as other favorites from their recent Out of Dreams EP and an impressive Echo and the Bunnymen cover. Being on tour with Arctic Monkeys has certainly done the local lads a few favours as their already tight live performance seems to have become even slicker and the pace has somehow quickened. The future is looking brighter by the day for the Deltasonic three-piece who will no doubt be playing some part in the actual festival as Deltasonic is one of it's partner labels, along with Domino, Mish Mosh and Island.

Confirmed acts for so far include Kate Nash and The Wombats. These, in the coming weeks, expect to be joined by acts from all corners of the globe. For those who cannot make it to The Pool of Life in May, fear not. You will be able to log on and watch every second of the action as Sound City will be the first festival to broadcast live via Second Life on the internet. Fantastic.
