Sound principles

"Imagine…Remember, Reflect, React"

These are the words that form the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2008. It's quite an honour for Liverpool to be the host city and, as such, a series of special events have been organised. One such is by the choir Sense of Sound, taking place at St. George's Hall. Their performance will incorporate music, movement and spoken word. As well as the choir, the composition will also feature Sarajevo born singer, Téa Hodzic. If you're after something a bit more cultured than Supercross, and a little less hectic than a dub night, but more of that later, this should be your first port of call.

Reggae at the riff

While many of you crazy party animals may be heading to Barfly for Circus on Friday, others of you may be craving something a little different. Django's Riff, on Wood Street, continuously puts on nights that stray off the beaten track. What you won't hear are sub standard acoustic sets and monotonous indie drivel. What you will hear is latin, drum and bass, jazz, funk and even some beat boxing.

On this occasion, genre is DUB, mixed with a little reggae and roots. To try to define in too much detail would be hypocritical. Go and check it out for yourself.

Teen spirit

"Interested in making music, putting on gigs and meeting new friends on Saturday afternoon?"

That's the blurb for these up-and-coming music workshops where no experience is necessary and absolute beginners are welcome. Unfortunately the workshops are for 10-16 year olds, meaning that aspiring rock-star dads need not apply.

Drums are one of the workshops on offer. There are also courses in bass guitar, electric guitar, vocals, songwriting, music technology and DJ-ing.

Details below.

Biker groove

Who said the arena was only going to be for great bands, like Boyzone?

This weekend, it will transform into a four-lane dirt obstacle course in order to house a load of mud. And motorbikes. And stuff.

Confused? Supercross is coming to town! Basically, that means we get to watch a load of guys driving motorcycles racing really fast in circles, jumping over steep obstacles and generally risking their life and limb for our own enjoyment. Hurrah!

More than 5,000 tons of soil has been shipped in (and it was all so clean) to create the course which will feature some of the world's top American and European Supercross riders.

In addition to the racing element, the event will also feature a freestyle jump show and dancing girls.

Just don't blame us if your children want a motorbike for their birthday – or indeed, a dancing girl.
