Something for the Weekend (03-05 October 08)
British Musical Firework Championships
Good news for firework fanatics; if Liverpool One’s opening display left you wanting bigger and better bangers and bonfire night still seems like light years away, you’re in luck. The British Musical Firework Championships return to Southport’s King Gardens this weekend and the programme for the event is looking particularly good this year.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the event will welcome back the winners from previous years triggering a champion of champions contest. A firework- off if you like.

Competition aside, the surroundings of the marine lake are already quite spectacular so throw in some cracking music choreographed with unimaginably colourful skies and you’re certain of a winner.

British Musical Firework Championships @ Kings Gardens, Southport Fri 3-Sun 5th Oct, tickets £4-£6 advance, £5-£7.50 on the gate, under 5’s go free, seated tickets £15-£20, for more information and to book, call 01704533333

Le Corbusier
You can’t imagine a Le Corbusier exhibition landing in Liverpool twenty-one years ago, can you? It was 1987 when the much-respected architect-come-artist-come designer was last at the centre of a UK based exhibition, in the Hayward Gallery London. Now Le Corbusier arrives in Liverpool - well a hefty part of his collection anyway and some of his best work ranging from the iconic furniture designs, sculptures, paintings and prints.

The event, which hopes to attract some 100,000 visitors to the city, was threatened with cancellation last year before the fears for lack of space were eventually overcome. The exhibition will run at the Crypt until January 2009.

Le Corbusier @ the Crypt, Metropolitan Cathedral, until 18th January 2009

Foals
Hotly-tipped indie band Foals are to play the Carling Academy this Friday.

After a hugely successful summer festival run, the band has an extensive autumn tour to enjoy before concentrating on a follow up their infectious debut album Antidotes. Expect to hear familiar hits such as 'Cassius' and 'Balloons' to feature in the band's notoriously energetic live set.

Foals mark the start of an impressive live calendar for music lovers in the city with Dizzee Rascal, Goldfrapp and Vampire Weekend just some of the big names on the way ahead of the MTV awards next month.

Foals @ the Carling Academy, Fri 3rd Oct, 7pm, tickets £13.50, call ticketweb on 0844772222

Bold Street Festival
There's never been so many places to shop in the city. Whilst the buzz around Liverpool One is great, a trek up to Bold Street this Saturday would be well worth the effort. There's a bit of a knees up planned to celebrate the independent nature of many shops.

Alongside the usual quirkiness, store discounts and samba dancers are likely but also expect competitions, raffles and fund raising as well as live DJs, goody bags and free food/drink samples. Pop along and join the independant retailers for a smashing afternoon.

The festival will take place along Bold Street on Saturday, 9am-5pm
