What is a prom?

A Prom means a Promenade Concert, or a concert where part of the audience stands in a 'promenade' area of the hall. The BBC Proms is an annual music festival running from mid-July to mid-September and comprising over 70 Prom concerts. The Last Night of the Proms, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, is one of the most popular classical music concerts in the world, watched and listened to by an audience of many millions around the globe.

How does Salford's event relate to the BBC event at the Royal Albert Hall?
There are five main BBC Proms in the Park events in 2010 - in Dundee, Hillsborough Castle - County Down, London, Swansea and of course Salford. All will be centred around a live concert with high-profile artists and presenters, culminating in a live big screen link-up to the Royal Albert Hall.

Why is Salford hosting this event?
The event is being made possible through the major new partnership between Salford City Council and the BBC Philharmonic. The aim is for the orchestra to build active links with the city's communities between now and 2011, when the BBC opens its new centre in the north, MediaCityUK at Salford Quays.
