Casablanca, Key Largo, The Magnet...no not Liverpool bars but classic films now showing for free at St Luke's

Play it again...

FOR years, people hanging around St Luke's, have kept themselves warm with a wee nip or several to keep the biting cold away, putting the "bombed-out" into “bombed out church”.

But, but but... you may wish to take a leaf out of the Thunderbird crew's book and grab some warming grog of your own, because tonight and for the next three weeks, in factually, you have the opportunity to go and watch Bogey movies, great Liverpool-inspired movies, and fabulous Christmas movies, all inside the grounds of the church, every night until Xmas, and all....absolutely free.

How come? Well you never know much with Ambrose Reynolds, Liz Carlisle and the Urban Strawberry Lunch people who keep the faith by faithfully keeping St Luke's open to the curious public throughout the year.

They have taken a much loved but ignored building as "a catalyst for cultural rebirth, regenerating and caring for the space, making it available and open for the people of Liverpool and its visitors and guests". It says that here, but it's actually quite true.

And to their eternal credit, USL don't seem to subscribe to much PR, so you often stumble across what going on within the hallowed portals of this

hidden Leece St gem by way of a flyer taped to the railings. And in this case, happy accident.

Until December 21 (not Mondays) there are screenings every day at 4pm and 6pm of films that you may never have seen on the big screen but really should do. Thus, this week it's the Bogey man, next week it's classic films with a Liverpool theme or backdrop. The following week, get all misty eyed for your fave festive films.

Whether it's big chill or The Big Sleep, this may be the start of a beautiful friendship. Take your own chair and leave your spare change on the way out.

*Classic Movies at the Bombed Out Church, St Luke's, Leece Street, until Dec 21. Call 0151 709 7562.
