New Chorlton comedy night

Free entry comedy night starts at Electrik

Published on January 11th 2011.

New Chorlton comedy night

Back in October, Electrik put on a comedy night as part of the Manchester Comedy Festival. It went down a treat so they're going to make it a regular occurrence. 'Shockingly Funny' will take place every quarter, with the first one happening on Wednesday 9 February.

It's free to get in, and the line-up brings together established names on the circuit with up-and-coming local talent. The opener is Andrew Ryan, who's been compared to Ed Byrne and Ardal O'Hanlon (in looks as well as delivery style). He's made the finals in loads of national competitions, and is considered one of Ireland's best emerging comedians.

Second on the bill is Hayley Ellis, who you may have heard on Tinsel Takeover on Radio 1 on Christmas Day. She's only been doing stand-up since 2009 but has made a name for herself already as a funny lady to watch. She's from Manchester and is a regular presenter on Salford City Radio.

Next up is Kevin Shevlin who was the runner-up in the FHM Stand Up Hero competition in 2009 and got another second place in the So You Think You're Funny competition at Edinburgh Festival. He trades in tales of loserdom and failure with the opposite sex. His wit is of the dry, self-deprecating kind.

A contrast then to the high energy camp of the final act – Jonathan Mayor. He's been working the national circuit for years and is one of the resident comperes at the Frog and Bucket. Expect audience banter, glitter, and possibly some platform heels.

The man responsible for holding it all together will be quick-witted improviser Chris Brooker, who compered the last comedy night at Electrik.

Electrik's got a few other events worth mentioning in February. On Monday 14 February (aka Valentine's Day) they're doing a Guestrant event with Deanna Thomas who owns North Star Deli across the road. She'll be preparing a three-course meal for people who'd rather have a lively communal dining experience than do the awkward, conformist dinner for two over candlelight. Tickets for this event cost £25 – buy them from the bar.

Finally, it's Electrik's second birthday on 16 February. Everyone is invited to the party.

Shockingly Funny takes place on Wednesday 9 February from 7:30pm at Electrik, 559 Wilbraham Road, Chorlton, free entry.
