Lost weekend (April 12-14)

Arthur Miller comes to Static; Balkanarama at the Kazimier and join a Philharmonic choir

Published on April 12th 2013.

Lost weekend (April 12-14)

FIRST there was the rather frenzied drowning, in drink, of a certain former Prime Minister.

Now the precocious Tell Tale Theatre group is presenting the week's second bout of mass hysteria and alleged witch burning – this time as portrayed in Arthur Miller's classic play, The Crucible.

The three-year-old company exists to produce exciting theatre using members of the community, with or without acting experience, and The Crucible, at the city centre Static Gallery, promises “
an immersive, multimedia audience experience from the moment you enter the venue”.

Since their first outing, an original stage version of 1984, went down a storm at the Kazimier, Tell Tale have also reached the semi-finals of Nation's Best Am Dram on Sky Arts 1, getting all luvvied-up with their TV mentor Martin Shaw.

Live music, film extracts, surprises and a thought-provoking time all round is in store for an audience on three sides of the Static stage.

The Crucible, Static Gallery, 23 Roscoe Lane, L1. Tonight and Saturday, April 13, 7.30pm, plus a Saturday matinee performance at 1.30pm. Tickets £8/£10, here, or call 0871 220 0260. Age guidance: 13+

Never mind the Balkans
Balkanarama? Would that be the trio of Russian singers whose biggest hit was Roman Abramovich Is Waiting?

No. Even better. Balkanarama is an instrumental nightclub orgy of what has been described as "the new punk". Steady on.

The Kazimier brings you the tastes and sounds of the Balkans - offering you anything from sweet melodies of classic Balkan stompers to free shots of home-made Balkan plum brandy.

Dress up and enjoy the early live jam session (starts as the doors open at 10pm), mesmerising gypsy dance performances, Smash Kafana's klezmer/Balkan/gypsy set of the absolutely mosh-pity crowd-pleasers, DJ Shogun's freshly mixed balkan beats and more.

Balalaika a lot.

Liverpool Balkanarama, The Kazimier, 5-9 Wolstenholme Square, Saturday April 13, 10pm - late £8 before 11.30, £9 hereafter. Tickets available from Mello Mello on Slater St

Do you do better oral than choral?

Toothpaste people Colgate have teamed up with scouts from model agency Elite for a foray into the North West this Saturday.

So if you think you've got what it takes to be the next Kate Moss, get along to the Trafford Centre where they will be roaming on the lookout for the next catwalk queen or king.

There is also a stand where the achingly thin can totter over and meet with the Elite Model Look team and get some toothpaste.

The model application process consists of filling out an online form at the reception desk, having height measurements and digital polaroid’s taken with an Elite Model Look representative.

Then there's a lot more stuff here about toothpaste, which we didn't quite understand and, if you've read this far, you won't want to bother your pretty little head with.

Elite Model Look with Colgate Max White ONE 2013, The Orient, Trafford Centre, Manchester, Saturday, April 2013, noon-6pm.
