Eric Cantona takes Gordo to the movies

The pictures of the people at the premier on the Quays (and a very wrong story)

Eric Cantona takes Gordo to the movies

Gordo was invited to Vue cinemas on Salford Quays for the premier of Ken ‘minimum wage’ Loach’s new film, Looking For Cantona, being reviewed shortly by Confidential’s very own Sarah Tierney.

It was unfortunate as Gordo and the editor, Schofield, had started the day reviewing Room Restaurant at lunch. They had come across a very good bottle of Puilly Fume and decided to order four of them, so the afternoon went by in a blur.

Sitting down for the movie, Schofield, who had been placed at the back, had discovered the free bar and helped himself to yet another bottle during the screening. Meanwhile, Gordo was trying his best not to wet his pants as his hero, Eric, had sat down directly behind him.

After the film, we were treated to a knees up ‘after party’, you know, the type normally organised by Manchester’s wannabes where none of the stars actually turn up.

Except in this instance, they all did, with Eric himself seemingly giving everyone equal time for a chat. The female star of the film, Stephanie Bishop, was doing the rounds and spent time with a tongue twisted Gordo as were the rest of the cast. Gordo bumped into an old pal and his wife, Barry Sharples, joint boss of 2Ergo. “Hello Barry, how are you?” asks Gordo. “Great thanks Gordo”, replies one of the more pleasant millionaires in Manchester, “They invited me here as they smashed my house up…” You need to see the movie.

Barry and his business partner Neale Graham were doing business with Gordo back in the dot com boom days. The pair were talking to him about their vision for using telecoms and the net together for their company. Gordo as usual was spot on in his assessment. “You two haven’t got a bloody clue, Vertical Net Portals are the way forward”, says the cigar smoking overweight financial wizard. That was in 1999. Gordo went bankrupt in 2001 whilst the boys are worth somewhere north of two hundred million quid today.

In the meantime, Gordo remembers the last time he was in The King’s presence, a house party at a friend’s in Wilmslow, back in the day.

“My god”, mutters Eric, “Look at this woman coming down the stairs”. It was one of Gordo’s pal’s wives. Eric stops her at the bottom and demonstrates his power with women.

“Do you know why I am wearing this tie”, asks the King of Old Trafford. “It is,” says Eric in a very deep, growling French accent, about an inch from her ear, “so that when I have you naked on my bed, I can tie your arms around your back and then I will make love to you until you melt with pleasure….”

Now, if Gordo had said this to the lady he would have gotten a slap.

Right at that moment, Gordo could swear that given half a chance the lady would have turned on her heels and started back up the stairs, dragging Eric by his tie.

A good article but wouldn't it have been a good idea to caption the phots. With the exception of Cantona himself and Ken Loach, I haven't the faintest idea who anyone was. It's a bit like picking up someone else's holiday snaps from Boots.

Stephanie, the Editor got drunk and forgot his notes. Gordo takes your point.

This has got to be the first premiere shoot I've seen in years where not one picture features any "The," Magazine staff - how bizarre...it feels unnatural somehow
