Entertainment round-up 2010

A look back at memorable (and not so memorable) films, music and gigs of the year

Published on January 6th 2011.

Entertainment round-up 2010

Best festival:
In the City. Much improved this year, even with an app to let you know what was on when, In the City was full of new music and generated a beautiful buzz in the Northern Quarter over the three days in October. Click here for a recap.

Best music interview:
When Tamar Smith met Grime King Skepta. This interview further asserts how Confidential has become a melting pot of goings-on in the city. A rapper in a hotel room, scraping the lime scale out of a kettle with a knife? We were there. Click here to read.

Best gig:
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. This band of brothers are brass at its best. And what better venue to see them play in Manchester than at the home of great live music – Band on the Wall. The gig took place back in April but you catch a slice of the action in the video below. Look out for future gigs of theirs – you don’t want to miss them twice. Click here for the article and the video.

Best launch party:
Emporio Armani, The Avenue. Bear in mind that this is a clothes shop, Emporio Armani pulled out all the stops for their launch on the Avenue, Spinngfields, even going so far as to create their own club. What began as a standard affair nibbling on canapés on the shop floor, quickly turned into a one night extravaganza on a hidden/out of bounds floor of their huge building. By far the biggest and best launch party of 2010. click here to see the Facebook gallery from the night.

Best films of 2010:
- The Social Network (12A) click here.
We said: “A melting pot of friends, money and betrayal has made for a great, well-told tale.”

- Kick-Ass (15) click here.
We said: “A hugely enjoyable teenage movie for the Superbad/Spiderman crowd. Violent, brutal, sadistic, funny, controversial. Kids, don’t try this at home.”

Worst films of 2010
- Prince of Persia (12A) click here
We said: “If it’s story, dialogue or fulfilment you’re after, this is 116 minutes you’re never getting back, not for all the sand in Fant-Asia.”

- Sex and the City 2 (15) click here
We said: “This film is utterly, almost disgustingly opulent, flaunting lifestyles only slightly less possible to attain than in the series.”
